Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Power-Play Burst Leads to Clarkson Win at Michigan Tech

A 53-second span late in the second period on Saturday night in Houghton, MI could go a long way in determining Clarkson Hockey's NCAA postseason aspiration in late March.

The Golden Knights overcame a 2-0 deficit to Michigan Tech with three power-play goals with less than two minutes to play in the middle frame en route to a key 4-2 non-league victory over Michigan Tech at MacInnes Arena.

Clarkson, which skated to a 2-2 tie with the Huskies of the WCHA on Friday night, is unbeaten in its last six games (5-0-1) and enters the exam/holiday break with a 12-3-2 overall record. Ranked 4/5th in the nation, the Green and Gold return to play on January 3-4 when they host ECAC Hockey rivals Rensselaer and Union at Cheel Arena.

Postgame audio Head Coach Casey Jones

Clarkson's power play, which had seen good improvement over the past several games, never got the chance to get on track Friday night at Michigan Tech with just one man-advantage opportunity, but the Knights certainly made the most of their chances in the second game of the series. The Green and Gold struck four times on eight power plays on Saturday for their best outing on the man-advantage since going 4-of-9 against Yale on December 1, 2006.

Clarkson took full advantage of an abbreviate five-minute major penalty to the Huskies late in the middle frame, scoring three times in under a minute to take a 3-2 lead through 40 minutes.

Senior left wing Haralds Egle (Liepaja, Latvia) started the power-play roll with his second goal of the weekend and seventh of the season, connecting on a wrist shot at 17:40 with Captain  Devin Brosseau (St. Lambert, QUE) and junior Zach Tsekos (Montreal, QUE) assisting.

At 18:12, junior defenseman Jere Astren (Helsinki, Finland), playing in only his third game of the season, hit on a one-timer off a pass from freshman Mathieu Gosselin (Quebec City, QUE) for his first goal of the season to tie the game. Freshman Anthony Romano (Richmond Hill, ONT) also assisted.

Just 21 seconds later the Green and Gold took the lead as junior defenseman Connor McCarthy (LaSalle, QUE) scored his fifth power-play goal of the year as sophomore Josh Dunne (O'Fallon, MO) and Brosseau set up the go-ahead score at 18:33.

The Knights closed out the come-from-behind road victory with Brosseau's seventh goal of the season, another power-play marker, with 1:35 remaining in the third. Egle recorded the lone assist.

Clarkson outshot the Huskies 26-23.

Frank Marotte, Clarkson's graduate transfer in net, made 21 saves.

Early in the opening period Michigan Tech (10-8-1) capitalized on the first penalty of the night as Clarkson was whistled for a slashing minor at 4:53. The Huskies wasted little time in converting on the power play with Alec Broetzman's goal at 5:29.

Broetzman made it 2-0 for the home team with a breakaway score at 17:06 during a 4-on-4 situation.

Broetzman appeared to score again early in the second period, but the goal was waved off after it was ruled he batted the puck in with his hand.
