Jackson Provides Game-Winner and Roeloffs Tall in Net as Clarkson Blanks Ithaca 1-0

Potsdam, NY – Freshman Kyle Jackson took advantage of a loose ball in the box in the 54th minute, converting for the lone goal of the game, as the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team upended Ithaca College 1-0 in the opening round of the Liberty League playoffs Tuesday afternoon at Hantz Field.

The Golden Knights moved to 11-4-3 on the season and advance to the Liberty League Semifinals where they will face top-seeded Rensselaer. The other Liberty League Semifinal game will pit sixth-seeded RIT against second-seeded Hobart. The Bombers dropped to 12-5-2 on the year and now have to hope that their overall resume will qualify them for an at-large bid in the NCAA Tournament.

The first half 20 minutes of the game saw no shots as each of the team's felt one another out. It wasn't until Henry Gomez finally had a shot early in the 27th minute that either team was able to take a true shot, and that attempt hardly opened the floodgates. The two teams combined for just three shots in the first 45 minutes as the defenses cleared the ball regularly before any true chances could develop.

Much like the first meeting between the two teams in early October, Clarkson found the back of the net thanks to a corner kick. Early in the second half, the Golden Knights enjoyed a chance from the team's sideline corner and Mack Walton hit a hard cross into the box to get things started. The ball may have glanced off the head of a Clarkson player as Ithaca goalkeeper Max Lichtenstein jumped out to snag the cross. However, the he was unable to secure the ball and it fell to the ground where Kyle Jackson pounced on the miscue and buried a shot past the remainder of the Ithaca defense at 53:36.

Ithaca put pressure on the Golden Knights defense for the rest of the game, as the Bombers knew they needed to work hard to get the equalizer. Clarkson also packed in its defense to assure there would be no cheap goals, moving up on offense only when necessary. Ithaca had a few decent chances in the second half, outshooting Clarkson 10-2, but only three of those chances were on the frame. The Bombers' best opportunity was in the 74th minute when Colin Shust lofted a high shot from about 15 yards out, sending Roeloffs back towards the goal line. The goalkeeper's body was in the net and beyond the line, but he used the long arms of his 6-4 frame to keep the ball from passing the goal line and maintained the 1-0 lead.

Ithaca's last good chance came on a direct kick in the 82nd minute, but Roeloffs punched the ball away and the Bombers, while maintaining pressure, never had another quality chance for the rest of the contest.

Clarkson trailed in shots (11-4), shots on goal (4-3) and corner kicks (6-2). Ian Roeloffs finished with four saves for his eighth shutout of the season, two shy of the Clarkson single-season mark for goalkeepers (Vele Galovski had 10 in 1980). Lichtenstein finished with two stops for the Bombers.
