Knights Drop Season-Opener at SUNY Canton, 60-52

Canton, NY – Matt Higgins and Reese Swedberg each scored 14 points for the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team, but their efforts were not enough as the Golden Knights dropped the season-opener at SUNY Canton, 60-52.

The Golden Knights will regroup this weekend when they take on Alfred State and Alfred University in the Special T's Tipoff Classic.

The Green and Gold came out cold in the first few minutes, struggling on offense with some tentativeness. That allowed Canton to score the first six points until Jake Purdy dropped in a layup at 15:53 for Clarkson. The Knights fell back by as many as 10 (16-6) but the team rallied thanks to a string of 3-pointers. Roburt Welch and Matt Higgins hit 3-pointers and Jason Phelps buried a long-range shot at the 4:06 mark to pull Clarkson within five. Swedberg and Joe Lucas each made 3-pointers to give Clarkson its first lead at 23-22 when Lucas's 3-pointer dropped at the 2:55 mark, but Canton hit four free throws in the waning moments to regain the lead at the half, 26-23.

The Knights shot just 9-for-37 overall in the half, but stayed within striking distance by forcing 16 turnovers by the Kangaroos. Higgins scored seven points in the first half, but no other Clarkson player made more than one shot in the opening 20 minutes.

A 3-pointer by Higgins at the 15:43 mark gave Clarkson a brief lead at 31-28, but Canton rattled off eight straight points to reclaim the advantage and built the margin to nine (45-36) with less than 10 minutes to go in the half. Clarkson picked up eight straight points with a Jason Phelps 3-pointer sandwiched by baskets from Swedberg and Higgins to put the Knights within one. Clarkson tied the game at 49-49 at the 3:32 mark on another Phelps 3-pointer, but that was the last gasp for the Golden Knights. Clarkson shot just 1-for-7 in the final 3:30 as Canton slowly rebuilt its advantage from a few moments prior.

Higgins scored 14 points and Swedberg added 14 and six rebounds. Phelps also filled up the stat sheet with 11 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists, 3 steals and a block. Barryn Shark also chipped in seven assists and six boards. Canton was led by Danny Santana, who shot 10-for-11 from the free throw line for 18 points. Andrew Fitch notched 14 points, nine boards and six blocks.
