Knights Blanked by Fourth-Ranked Herons

Geneva, NY – A strong first-half effort by the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team was undone by a six-minute stretch of scoring by fourth-ranked William Smith, as the Golden Knights dropped a 5-0 decision to the Herons in Liberty League action Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights fell to 7-3-1 overall and 1-2-0 in the Liberty League, while William Smith moved to 8-1-1 and 4-0-0.

Clarkson kept things close and had some scoring chances in the first 45 minutes, but William Smith's defense stood up to the task and kept the Knights scoreless. It appeared as if Clarkson might escape the first half scoreless against the Herons, but a goal in the 43rd minute kick-started William Smith's offense. Katrine Berg took a corner kick and sent a long pass to the opposite side of the box, where the ball found the head of Elizabeth Moore and she finished with a shot just under the crossbar.

The second half saw a flurry of action by the Herons that quickly put the game out of reach. Sheila McQuillen accepted a pass from Amanda Adams and finished off the one-touch near the left post to make it 2-0 at 52:11, but the real backbreakers came 10 minutes later. Maegan Manning scored on a chip shot from the top of the penalty area at 61:50, Eileen Rath converted on a scramble in front at 63:03, and Mariah Deschino finished off the rally with William Smith's fifth goal at 67:48.

William Smith ended the game with a 21-6 edge in shots, including a 13-2 lead in shots on goal, and also enjoyed a 7-3 advantage in corner kick opportunities. Elyse Green made six saves for the Knights before being relieved by Emma Timerman, who made two stops in the final 22 minutes of the game. William Smtih's Amanda Kesler stopped two shots in 75 minutes of work and Justine Pearson spent 15 minutes in net without having to make a save.
