Bell Saves Eight, Walton Scores Late in Clarkson 1-0 Win

Potsdam, NY – Both goalkeepers played well, but it was Noah Bell who would come away with a shutout as the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team gained a 1-0 non-league win over SUNY Potsdam Tuesday night at Hantz Field.

The Golden Knights edged forward to 9-4-3 overall with one regular-season league contest remaining this weekend against Union College. Potsdam saw its season come to an end at 3-14-2.

Resting a handful of regular starters, the Golden Knights showed they have plenty of depth as the reserves stepped up in the first half to keep the game scoreless. The pace was quick at both ends with each team enjoying several solid scoring chances, but the best opportunities came in the second half.

In the first two minutes, Noah Bell made two impressive saves to his right, keeping the ball out of the Clarkson goal with a dive and knocking the chance out of bounds. That would prove to be the best scoring chance for the Bears in the second half, as Clarkson nearly scored three goals in the second half. Both Joey White and Mack Walton had chances in the 58th minute, but both were denied by Esdras Juarez. Twenty-plus minutes later it was the crossbar that kept the game 0-0 when Sebastian Dietachmair's attempt caught the woodwork at 81:04.

However, Clarkson would finally breakthrough in the 86th minute on a seemingly unassuming start. Bell started things off with a goal kick, sending the ball into the midfield where Clarkson won it on a header. The ball flicked forward to Aidan Subra, who headed the ball to the left, finding John Furcick. The senior midfielder settled the ball with his left foot and chipped a pass forward with his right, sending the ball back into the center of the field. Mack Walton collected the pass and split a pair of defenders, touching the ball forward and then lifting the ball over a diving Juarez at the 85:30 mark for a 1-0 lead.

Clarkson finished with a small 12-11 advantage in shots, including a 7-4 lead in the second half, and Potsdam held a 7-5 edge in corner kicks. Bell made eight saves for his second shutout of the season in as many starts. Juarez made six saves.
