Roeloffs and Klimek Star in Clarkson's 1-0 Win Over Skidmore

Saratoga Springs, NY – Ian Roeloffs was only truly challenged once, but the senior goalkeeper came up big for the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team, tipping a shot out of bounds in the waning seconds to help the Golden Knights hold on to a 1-0 Liberty League victory over Skidmore College Wednesday night.

The Golden Knights remained unbeaten in conference games, moving to 2-0-1 in the Liberty League and 6-3-1 overall, while Skidmore fell to 4-3-2 and 0-3-0. Clarkson is back at home this weekend when it hosts Hobart College.

Skidmore's best chances usually were shots that cleared the frame by several yards and the Thoroughbreds did not put much pressure on Clarkson's defense with legitimate scoring chances until the final minute. Rewarded a direct kick with just 30 seconds left in the game. David Braman ripped a shot from about 25 yards out, but the attempt squarely hit the post to Roeloffs' right. The ball ricocheted back out into traffic in front, where Ted Roach lofted a shot back at the frame just a few seconds later, but Roeloffs leaped and knocked the ball over the crossbar. Skidmore's corner kick failed to result in another shot as the Knights cleared the ball and embraced their goalkeeper as time ran out.

Although the shots on goal were even in the first half (3-3), not all chances were created equal. The Golden Knights three shots were true scoring opportunities as Michael Lanfear nearly broke the tie in the 34th minute, making Sebastian Bosch leap to make a save on a shot from about 20 yards out. Additionally, a pair of scrums in the penalty area easily could have resulted in a goal for the Knights, but each time the ball was cleared before a shot was taken. Skidmore's three shots on goal were soft attempts, the first was more of a cross from the end line outside of the penalty area while the other two were on direct kicks from more than 40 yards out, including one from a yard shy of the midfield line.

Clarkson again had an opportunity in the 55th minute as Cam Emde-Gerdine rifled a hard grounder from the top of the box which was denied by Bosch, but he couldn't collect it immediately, allowing Aidan Subra with an attempt up close. However, Subra's shot was stuffed by the Skidmore goalkeeper, keeping the game scoreless.

Nine minutes later, the Golden Knights ended the drought for both teams, finally coming through on one of the many busy scrums they had up close. Erick Naula took a corner kick and the ball was headed by two different Skidmore players on attempted clears. However, neither of the headers worked, as the ball found its way to Stephen Klimek in the middle of the box and he lifted a shot with his right foot to the left corner at 63:10 to give Clarkson a 1-0 advantage.

A second yellow card saw the removal of Brandon Bahr with about 12 minutes left in the game, putting Clarkson down a player for the last stretch of the match, but the Thoroughbreds mustered only two soft shots prior to their last flurry of offense in the final minute.

Clarkson finished with a 16-11 advantage in shots overall, a 9-5 lead in shots on goal, and a 5-3 edge in corner kick chances. Roeloffs made five saves for his second straight shutout, while Bosch stopped eight shots for Skidmore.
