Clarkson Doubled Up By Ithaca In Regular Season Finale

Ithaca, NY – Whatever the Clarkson University Men's Lacrosse did for the first 23 minutes of Wednesday's game worked flawlessly, but Ithaca College rectified its issues and scored 14 goals over the final 37 minutes to gain a 14-7 Liberty League victory over the Golden Knights in the regular-season finale for both squads.

Clarkson moved to 6-8 on the season and 3-5 in the Liberty League, while 15th-ranked Ithaca improved to 13-2 and 6-2. The two teams will face one another in the conference playoffs on Saturday, again in Ithaca, as Clarkson hopes to use its successes from the first quarter for a full 60 minuts.

In the first quarter, Clarkson forced the Bombers to turn the ball over nine times and held Ithaca to just six shots. The Golden Knights took advantage of Ithaca's slow start by scoring twice while up a player after Ithaca penalties. In the first few minutes, Ithaca was whistled for tripping and Tanner Cioffi scored on a pass from Sam Groves just 24 seconds into the penalty. Seven minutes later, a cross-checking call again put Clarkson at the advantage and this time Groves converted on a pass from Conor Bartlett to give the Knights a 2-0 lead with 4:37 remaining. Evan Burgett scored at even-strength for the Knights at the 11:58 mark of the second period to put Clarkson up 3-0.

Midway through the second quarter, Ithaca began to assert itself offensively and took just five minutes to erase the Clarkson lead. Josh Della Puca scored at 7:04 and was followed by goals in quick succession from Kaelan Fitzpatrick (3:33), Dan Lee (2:55), and Greg Drillock (1:58) to put Ithaca up 4-3 at the break.

The Bombers carried that late second quarter surge into the third, shutting out the Knights in that stretch of 15 minutes while scoring six times themselves, gaining a 10-3 advantage. Mark Uhlig ended Clarkson's 28-minute scoreless stretch with a goal at 13:56 in the fourth, but by that point Clarkson's offense was unable to muster enough of a comeback to truly push the Bombers. Peter Herrick scored twice in the fourth and Pierce Currie scored with 2:10 left, the final goal of the contest.

Ithaca finished the game with an edge in shots (38-26) and more modest leads in groundballs (41-39) and caused turnovers (16-12). Clarkson won the battle on faceoffs with Ryan Gabriel taking nine of his 14 chances and Riley Holzman finishing event at 5-for-10. Herrick and Groves each tallied two points while Uhlig, Cioffi, Currie and Burgett each scored one goal. Gabriel added six groundballs and Liam St. Croix notched four groundballs and four caused turnovers. Michael Nourse also tossed in three groundballs and two caused turnovers. In the Clarkson crease, Kevin Dyckmann made eight saves in relief of Colin Holt, who stopped six shots.

For Ithaca, Josh Della Puca recorded four points on three goals and an assist and Dan Lee added in three points, scoring twice and adding an assist. Winston Wenham scooped up nine groundballs for the Bombers, also adding five caused turnovers. Robby Atwood made eight saves for the Bombers.
