Clarkson Denied In Fourth Quarter in 11-7 Loss to St. Lawrence

Potsdam, NY – Freshman Evan Burgett scored three times in the second half, but his late-game effort was not enough for the Clarkson University Men's Lacrosse team to overcome 18th-ranked St. Lawrence as the Golden Knights dropped an 11-7 Liberty League decision on Wednesday night at Hantz Turf Field.
The Golden Knights fell back below .500 at 5-6 overall and went to 2-3 in conference games. The Saints improved to 9-2 overall and 4-1 in league play, tying for second in the conference.

Through three quarters, Clarkson trailed by just a single goal thanks to Burgett's late score in the third, but St. Lawrence outscored the Knights 4-1 in the final 15 minutes to hold on for the win.
At the start of the game, Colin Holt stood out for his performance in the Clarkson crease, denying numerous shots in the early going. However, Harrison Koch finally solved the sophomore goalkeeper and put the Saints up 1-0 with 2:10 remaining in the first quarter. Koch scored again five minutes later to put the Saints up by two, but Conor Bartlett found Sam Groves on the right side at 7:42 to put the Knights on the board. It appeared as if Clarkson would stay close to St. Lawrence up until the break, but Mike Donnelly tallied twice in the final two-plus minutes, finding the net at 2:12 and then scoring while St. Lawrence was down a player on a penalty with 44 seconds left to put the Saints up 4-1.

The Golden Knights found their offensive groove in the third quarter, rattling off four straight goals in the first eight minutes. Marcus Lavarnway converted on a hard shot from the right side at 13:45, Conor Bartlett ripped a shot past SLU goalkeeper Alex Terry at 11:54, and Bartlett picked up a loose ball from way out and flipped a groundball into an open net at 10:02 when Terry was outside of the crease adding extra pressure. The Knights then gained the lead three minutes later on a goal from Evan Burgett at 7:14, but the Saints would quickly tie the game up at 5-5 when Brian Cunningham scored with St. Lawrence up a player following a Clarkson penalty.

The Saints regained the advantage with 2:26 left in the third quarter on a hard shot from Harrison Koch and, following a faceoff violation, Zachary Ettinghausen raced into the Clarkson defensive zone and found Jordan Dow in front for a goal only seven seconds after Koch's goal had put the Saints back in the lead.

On two occasions, Evan Burgett would pull Clarkson to within a goal, once at the end of the third and then again early on in the fourth quarter, but St. Lawrence responded with goals each time to enjoy a two-goal cushion. Clarkson had its chances late in the quarter, but a turnover in the final three minutes allowed St. Lawrence to rush down the field and Charlie Gallop tallied at 2:06 for an insurance goal. A minute later, Clarkson was trying to put extra pressure on the Saints to force St. Lawrence into a miscue late in the shot clock, but Nick Brindisi lobbed a shot into an open net at 1:08 to put the game away.

St. Lawrence owned a modest advantage in shots (29-27) while Clarkson won 17 of 22 faceoffs, but the Saints forced the Golden Knights into 23 turnovers to make up for the deficiency.

Burgett finished with three goals and was tied with Conor Bartlett, who had two goals and an assist, for the team lead in points. Sam Groves and Shane Kilday also recorded two points apiece. Ryan Gabriel went 17-for-22 on faceoffs, picking up eight groundballs, while Derek Beatty was also busy with five groundballs. Holt finished with eight saves for the Knights.

Koch entered the game with six points in seven games for St. Lawrence, and he added three goals to his total after Wednesday night's game. Jordan Dow chipped in two goals and an assist for three points and Donnelly and Conor Caffrey each scored two points. Sam Boehle led the Saints with four groundballs. Alex Terry made five stops in the St. Lawrence crease.
