Knights Break Out With 13-5 Win Over Western New England

Auburndale, FL – After a slow start offensively in which the team recorded just 25 hits in its first four games, the Clarkson University Baseball team's bats woke up with a 17-hit effort in a 13-5 victory over Western New England at the Lake Myrtle Complex.

The Golden Knights improved to 3-2 on the season and will get a day off before closing out the last three games of the trip, including a doubleheader against Elmhurst College on Tuesday and a single nine-inning game versus SUNY Cobleskill.

Clarkson began with two runs in the top of the third as Joe Stockman started the rally with a single to center. Ben Knauf followed with a single to send Stockman to third and Will Coleman drove in the first run with another single. Brad Pearson grounded out to score Knauf to give the Knights a 2-0 lead.

In the fifth, the Knights produced six runs to blow the game open. After the leadoff hitter was retired, Clarkson delivered five straight hits. Knauf doubled home Burns and scored on a hit by Pearson to make it 4-0. Mike Krick drove home Will Coleman and then a fielder's choice by Ernesto Ruiz-Sierra forced in another run to give the Knights a 6-0 advantage. Two more runs came around on a throwing error as Clarkson concluded the inning with an 8-0 lead.

Western New England responded with two in the bottom half of the fifth on a single from Kevin Johnson, but the Knights picked up single runs in the sixth and seventh. Krick drove home Knauf with a sacrifice fly in the sixth and Ruiz-Sierra circled the bases on a single, a passed ball and two wild pitches to make it 10-2. A solo home run from Alex Loparco pulled Western New England back within seven in the bottom half of the inning.

Clarkson put the game away with three runs in the eighth. Pearson singled and came home on a Krick double while both Zack Riccardi and Burns drove in runs with singles. Western New England cracked back with two in the bottom of the ninth, but it was far from enough to scare Clarkson that late in the game.

Six player had multi-hit games for the Knights, led by a 4-for-6 effort from Pearson and a 3-for-5 game from Stockman. Krick drove in three runs and Knauf scored three times. Rory Corcoran picked up the win with seven strong innings, allowing three earned runs on eight hits with no walks.
