Late Rally Comes Up Short as Clarkson Falls 68-63 at SLU

Canton, NY – A last second chance for the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team became a turnover and a dunk as St. Lawrence held on for a 68-63 Liberty League win over the Golden Knights Tuesday night at Burkman Gymnasium.

The Green and Gold dropped to 0-8 overall and 0-3 in the Liberty League, while the Saints edged forward to 4-4 and 2-1. Clarkson heads to Connecticut on Saturday to face Trinity in its final game of the first semester.

The Golden Knights started off hot, shooting 6-for-8 overall and 5-for-6 from beyond the 3-point arc, with the only miss from distance coming on a 30-foot attempt. Despite the strong shooting, however, the Knights led by just three (17-14) because of three turnovers committed and five offensive rebounds by the Saints. St. Lawrence took the lead as the Knights went scoreless for over five minutes, finally getting back on the board on a long jumper from Chris Hulbert, tying the game at 19-19. A Matt Higgins layup at 6:21 drew the Knights to within one (23-22), but the Saints ended the half on a 14-4 run in the final six minutes, which would have been worse had Matthew Hornak not tipped in a missed three on the last possession of the half.

After making six of its first eight attempts, Clarkson shot only 4-for-20, including 12 straight misses from beyond the 3-point arc, for the final 14 minutes of the half, allowing the Saints to head into the break with a double-digit lead, 37-26.

The Saints extended their advantage to 15 in the opening moments of the second half, but Clarkson began to make shots from the perimeter to steadily close the gap. Liam Ellis hit a 3-pointer and Jason Phelps added another at 15:57 to pull the Knights within five (41-36). Trailing again by nine, Ellis hit another 3-pointer and Keenan Gayle buried his second 3-pointer of the game a few minutes later to cut the margin to four (57-53). A Chris Hulbert 3-pointer a few minutes later had the Knights shooting 8-for-13 from the 3-point arc after missing 12 straight to end the first half.

The deficit continued to bounce back and forth, as Clarkson eventually got to within two on a couple of occasions, including a driving basket from Roburt Welch with 2:20 to go (65-63). After the Saints missed a pair of free throws, the Knights had two chances to take the lead on 3-pointers, but both missed the mark.

In the final 75 seconds, St. Lawrence committed a turnover on an inbound pass and the Knights attempt to take the lead with another 3-pointer was off left, putting pressure on both teams to find a knockout punch. Another turnover by St. Lawrence on a long pass gave Clarkson a chance to win or tie the game on a final possession with 27.5 seconds remaining. The Knights had their opportunities, but a Roburt Welch 3-pointer from the corner went long, and after an offensive rebound, a Keenan Gayle attempt at the elbow extended also went just long. This time the Saints corralled the rebound and forced the Knights to foul. With 2.7 seconds left, Adeleke Karera made his first free throw, but after a timeout he missed his second and Hornak gathered the board and quickly called for a timeout.

Unfortunately, St. Lawrence put its 6-10 forward Karera on the inbound, and the freshman jumped up for a clean steal, took one step and dunked the ball home to end Clarkson's hope for a miracle 3-pointer. The Knights were streaky from distance, enduring lulls of 0-for-12 and 0-for-9 from the 3-point line, but hitting 13 of 19 in the interim.

Hornak finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds while Hulbert and Ellis each cashed in for 11 points. For St. Lawrence, Riley Naclerio ended up with 24 points and 11 rebounds, with Ben Crawford and Chris Miner chipping in 14 and 11 points, respectively.
