Knights On The Board with 81-78 Victory Over SUNY Canton

Potsdam, NY – Junior Matt Higgins posted a season-high 24 points in just 21 minutes, including what proved to be the game-winning play in the final minute, as the Clarkson University Men's Basketball earned its first win of the season with an 81-78 victory over SUNY Canton on Sunday afternoon.

The Golden Knights moved to 1-9 and will finish off the season with 15 straight league games, beginning next weekend with home contests against Vassar College and Bard College.

With the game tied at 77-77, Clarkson chose to eliminate time off the clock, eventually getting the ball to Higgins. The junior guard went baseline and finished off a layup underneath while drawing a foul. He hit the ensuing free throw to put the Knights up by three, which proved to be the ending margin.

It didn't always appear as if Clarkson would end up breaking its winless streak as the Knights fell behind by nine (14-5) in the first five minutes of Sunday's game. Canton continued to hold a healthy advantage for the next four minutes, even edging out to as many as 11 points. However, Jason Phelps hit a 3-pointer and then made a layup to cut the margin go five, and Reese Swedberg made back-to-back layups to drop the deficit to just one at the 9:24 mark (25-24). Five minutes later, Matthew Hornak hit three straight free throws to give Clarkson a 31-30 advantage, and the two teams wrestled back and forth for the remainder of the quarter, eventually setting in a 36-36 tie at the break.

Canton regained its advantage in the early going of the second half, but a four-point play from Higgins tied the game at 45-45. Higgins 3-pointer from the top of the key took two bounces before finally falling through and he finished the play off with a free throw. Canton again pushed out to a four-point edge, but the middle of the second half belonged to Clarkson. Sparked by a 3-pointer from Roburt Welch which put the Knights up by two, Clarkson went on a 19-6 run, concluding on another long distance shot from Welch with 6:07 to go. The Kangaroos ratcheted up their defensive effort, responding with a 13-1 run of their own, capped off by a Joseph Werner 3-pointer from the corner to tie the game at 74-74. Higgins hit a three a minute later, but again the Roos wouldn't go away, tying the game up at 77-77 with free throws over the next 75 seconds. After Higgins converted on the baseline to put Clarkson up, the Knights fouled to keep the Roos from shooting a 3-pointer. Brandon Adkisson made his first free throw attempt, but his attempt at a miss on the second free throw turned into a violation. Higgins made one free throw at the other end to put Clarkson back up by three and Canton would be unable to get another shot off as Holliday stumbled in his attempt to get free for a shot at the buzzer.

Higgins finished with 24 points, shooting 5-for-9 from beyond the 3-point arc, while Welch scored all 15 of his points in the second half, going 9-for-10 from the line in only 19 minutes of play overall. Phelps also scored 15 points, while Keenan Gayle contributed seven rebounds and Barryn Shark added five assists and three steals. For Canton, Holliday shot 8-for-11 from the floor for 19 points and Adkisson added 17 points. Andrew Fitch recorded 11 points, 7 rebounds and 6 blocked shots before fouling out and Jordan Stewart added 10 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists. The Roos shot 57.7% from the field, but turned the ball over 17 times.
