Stoddard Tallies Four Points in Knights' 9-1 Win at Brown

Providence, RI – Sophomore Tia Stoddard had a hand in three of the first four goals for the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team and classmate Kia Castonguay denied 17 shots for her first collegiate victory in the Golden Knights' crease as the Green and Gold routed Brown University 9-1 in ECAC Hockey action Friday night.

The Golden Knights, ranked third in the latest national polls, improved to 10-1-0 overall and 3-0-0 in ECAC Hockey play while Brown dropped to 5-4-1 and 2-4-1. Clarkson looks to add to its six-game winning streak when it takes on Yale University on Saturday afternoon.

As has been the theme for the Knights since they started league play, Clarkson started off slowly on offense, but once the first goal came little could slow down the nation's top-scoring team. The first few goals came from less than familiar sources, as sophomore Kristy Pidgeon tallied her first goal of the season with help from Stoddard at 17:58, putting the Knights up 1-0 through the first period. Brown knotted the game up 1-1 early at the start of the second frame when Sena Hanson scored her seventh goal of the year, but Clarkson was about ready to unleash its offense on the Bears.

The game was tied for only 1:40 before Stoddard scored her first goal of the season thanks to assists from Taylor Turnquist and Pidgeon at 3:01. The most dynamic line in college hockey then found its groove at 6:58 as junior Michaela Pejzlova scored on assists from Loren Gabel and Elizabeth Giguere to make it 3-1. Brown regrouped for the next 10 minutes and kept the score at 3-1, but the Knights put the game away in a stretch of only 70 seconds. Stoddard scored her second goal of the game at 17:40 with help from Ella Shelton and Pidgeon, and Gabel produced two goals just 21 seconds apart at 18:29 and 18:50 with Pejzlova, Giguere, and Emma Keenan providing assistance.

Clarkson picked up three more goals in the third to add to the lopsided game as Pejzlova scored at 1:10, Giguere tallied a short-handed goal at 5:38, and Meaghan Hector, in her first action of the 2018-19 season, notched a power-play marker at 16:38 with help coming from Stoddard.

Stoddard entered the game with three assists this season and eight points in her collegiate career, but skated off Meehan Auditorium's ice with four more points thanks to two goals and two assists. Pidgeon tied her collegiate-high with three points on a goal and two assists while both Gabel and Pejzlova added three points with two goals and an assist each. Giguere also scored three points with a goal and two assists.

In her collegiate debut, Castonguay picked up her first win with 17 saves through 60 minutes, as Clarkson outshot Brown 44-18. The Knights went 1-for-3 on the power play while the Bears were scoreless in five chances.
