CU Volleyball Preview - at Frostburg Tournament (10/26-27)

With one last weekend before the conference tournament, the Clarkson University Volleyball team is looking to gain even more momentum as it travels to Maryland for three more matches, including one against a regionally-ranked New York foe.

Live Stats/Live Video

The Series: Clarkson faces SUNY Geneseo on Friday night and then takes on Salisbury and host Frostburg State on Saturday to close out its foray in Maryland. The Golden Knights and Geneseo have faced one another 14 times, with Clarkson winning just three times. However, only two of those matches occurred in the last decade, both Clarkson sweeps. The Green and Gold have never faced either Salisbury or Frostburg State.

Key Stats for Clarkson (14-9): Despite getting hit with the injury bug of late, the Knights have won five of their last six matches and three straight. As usual, the Golden Knights defense is the reason as no team has hit better than .200 since mid-September against Clarkson, a stretch of 14 straight matches. Clarkson's 21.67 digs per set rank fourth in the nation, thanks in large part to junior Kate Isaksen, who ranks second nationally in digs per set (7.98). Isaksen has three of the top eight single-match dig figures in NCAA Division III this year and leads the country in total digs (734). Classmate Rachel Reusch struck for a career-high 22 kills on Tuesday to raise her season average to 3.47 kills per set along with a .342 hitting percentage.

Key Stats for SUNY Geneseo (20-7): Unbeaten in the SUNYAC at 9-0, the Knights have swept seven of their nine opponents in conference matches to put a solid uptick on their numbers. In league matches, Geneseo is hitting .198 against .185 in non-conference with 12.10 kills per set versus 11.27. No matter who she's playing against, junior outside hitter Grace Cergol puts up impressive numbers, hitting .247 with 4.24 kills and 3.15 digs per set. Three other hitters hover around two kills per set, including Maddie McLaughlin (2.17 kps), Abby May (2.08 kps) and Bridget Lougen (1.99 kps). Lougen also leads the team in blocks (64).

Key Stats for Salisbury (13-9): The Sea Gulls have hit a bit of a rough patch recently with losses in three of their last four matches against solid competition, but a well-rounded offense can get them out of a slump quickly. Nicole Venturelli leads the team with 3.16 kills per set while Amanda Chew contributes 2.81 kills per game. The two best hitters by percentage each average around two kills per set in Carley Cleland (.301) and Gianna Savarese (.293). Hailey Dougherty headlines the defense with 4.90 digs per set and Rachel Dubbs distributes the ball at a rate of 7.94 assists per game.

Key Stats for Frostburg State (10-20): Following a 16-win season in 2017, the Bobcats have struggled to get to double figures in wins this year, but Frostburg still has some weapons on offense. Junior middle hitter Biamba Tshitenge leads the team on offense with 2.73 kills per set and is hitting .242. More importantly, Tshitenge controls the opposition with a good block, scoring 28 solo blocks and 36 block assists for 0.73 per set. Frostburg's best asset might be its consistently dangerous servers as Bailey Godlove (37 aces), Cori Smothers (36 aces) and Katie Onyundo (35 aces) have each done damage from the service line. Smothers (4.84 digs per set) and Onyundo (7.70 assists per set) also lead the team in other categories.
