Knights Open New Year Hosting RPI & Union

Back in action for the first time since early December, the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team brings a six-game winning streak into its first games of 2018. Guided by 10th-year Head Coach Matt Desrosiers and assistants Britni Smith and Tony Maci, the Golden Knights are ranked third in the national polls with a 17-3-1 overall record. Clarkson, led by senior captain, defenseman Savannah Harmon, stands in a three-way tie for first place in the ECAC Hockey standings with an 8-2 league mark.

Clarkson, which last played on December 8-9, sweeping Union (5-1) and Rensselaer (4-1) on the road, hosts the Capital District rivals this weekend at Cheel Arena. The Green and Gold face off against the Engineers on Friday at 6:00 p.m. and then take on the Dutchwomen on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.

• The Knights' six-game winning streak is the second longest current stretch in the nation, trailing only Boston College's 12 games. 
• Clarkson is third in the country in defense, allowing only 1.14 goals per game and, fourth in offense, scoring 3.95 GPG.
• Strong specialty teams' play has been a key factor in the Knights' success. Clarkson is second in the NCAA in combined specialty teams' play at 61.5% (107/174). The Knights' power play is third in the nation, clicking at 26.6% (21-79), while the shorthanded unit is second in the country at 90.5%, killing off 86-of-95 opponent power plays. 
• One of the top lines in the country powers the Clarkson offense. The trio of sophomore center Michaela Pejzlova, junior left wing Loren Gabel and freshman right wing Elizabeth Giguere has accounted for 45% of the Knights scoring with 98 (45-53) of the team's 218 (83-135) points. Gabel,  Giguere and Pejzlova are the top three scorers in ECAC Hockey both overall and in league play.
• Gabel has 35 points on 15 goals and 20 assists and leads the Knights in plus/minus at +28. She recently joined the Green and Gold's Century Club and is averaging over a point per game in her career with 55 goals and 49 assists for 104 points through 102 games. Gabel has twice been named ECAC Hockey Player of the Month (October, December).
• Giguere has made an immediate impact at the Division I level and is tied with Gabel atop the Clarkson scoring charts with 35 points, including a team-high 21 assists. She is just two points shy of setting a new single-season record for points by a Clarkson freshman. Giguere was named HCA National Rookie of the Month for December.
• Pejzlova enters the second half with a 12-game point streak (12-7). She has 28 points and leads the Knights in goals with 16. Pejzlova is tied for second in the country in power-play markers with six.
• Senior Shea Tiley ranks among the NCAA's best in all the major goaltending categories. She posts 1.18 goals against average (3rd in the nation), a .944 save percentage (3rd), a .833 winning percentage (5th) and leads the nation in shutouts with eight.Tiley, who has started the last 34 games for the Green and Gold, is Clarkson's career leader in wins (96) and shutouts (32). She was named HCA National Player of the Month (December)
• Gabel and defensemen, junior Josiane Pozzebon and sophomore Ella Shelton participated with Team Canada in the Nations Cup, held in Fussen, Germany on January 3-6.

Scouting RPI and Union
The Engineers have a 7-10-5 overall record and are 4-4-2 in conference play good for eighth place in the ECAC Hockey standings. RPI has not won since a 3-1 victory at Yale on December 2. The Engineers are on a four-game winless skid (0-3-1) after losing 2-1 to Harvard and tying Dartmouth 3-3 at Houston Field House last weekend. 

Union enters the North Country coming off a big 3-1 victory over Harvard in Schenectady on Saturday. The Dutchwomen, who play at St. Lawrence on Friday, stand at 6-13-3 overall and are in ninth place in the league standings with a 4-6 ECAC Hockey mark. Union is just 1-7-1 away from Messa Rink.

The Series:
Clarkson has won six straight against the Engineers after a 4-1 win in the Golden Knights' final game of the first semester. Clarkson now leads the all-time series 22-5-2. Gabel leads the way against RPI with five goals and six assists for 11 points. Gabel was able to get an assist against RPI on December 9th before the break. Tiley is now 8-1-0 in her career versus RPI with a .917 save percentage and a 1.73 GAA.

Clarkson has dominated the series all-time against Union, leading 28-1-0. Most recently the Golden Knights defeated Union 5-1 on December 8th in the final weekend of the first half. Titus and Harmon have done the most damage to Union with 15 points between the two of them in their careers. Titus scored the first goal of the game on December 8th against Union and Harmon had a power-play goal and assist in the game. Tiley has continued her stellar play against Union over her career. Following the matchup over break, Tiley has a 0.25 GAA and a .985 save percentage against Union over her career.
