Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | September 26, 2017

Knights Come Up Short Against SLU, Fall 2-0

Potsdam, NY – When the opportunities presented themselves, St. Lawrence took advantage, scoring twice in the opening 20 minutes as the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team saw its modest two-game winning streak come to an end with a 2-0 defeat against the Saints on Tuesday night at Hantz Turf Field.

The Golden Knights dropped to 5-4-0 overall and 1-1-0 in league play, while St. Lawrence got a much needed win to move to 3-4-2 and 1-1-0.

The first solid scoring chance of the game came in the first few minutes as Kevin Calnan had a one-on-one with St. Lawrence goalkeeper Mike Smith. Calnan was about 10 yards out and tried to go to his right, but Smith stuck out his left arm at the last second and got enough of the ball to corral it and not allow a rebound to any other charging Clarkson players.

A few minutes later, St. Lawrence got on the scoreboard first with a burst of speed from Tapshak Augustine. The junior forward received a pass from midfield at about 35 yards out and then out ran one Clarkson defender. A second back slid over to deny the attempt, but Augustine crossed over for a one-one-one with Clarkson's Ian Roeloffs. The Knights' goalkeeper guessed the shot was going to go right, but Augustine stayed left and went into the short corner for a goal late in the 13th minute.

About seven minutes later, Roeloffs denied a hard shot from the Saints with a great diving save, but the ensuing corner kick resulted in another St. Lawrence goal. Miguel Ridruejo sent a hard cross into the box and Ryan Crouse ran around a few players to put a straight head on it at the 19:47 mark.

That two goal spurt by St. Lawrence proved to be enough for the Saints to claim the win. The Knights had some chances in the second half as SLU keeper Mike Smith was called upon several times, but even with a 10-9 lead in shots and an 8-6 advantage in corner kick opportunities, Clarkson was unable to find the back of the net.

Roeloffs finished with two saves for Clarkson, while Smith made seven stops for the shutout win for St. Lawrence.
