Clarkson Falls to RPI, 9-0, in Liberty League Winners Bracket Contest

Troy, NY – The extra rest created by yesterday's rain didn't seem to help the Clarkson University Softball team on Saturday morning as the Golden Knights committed five errors in a 9-0 loss in the winners' bracket game of Liberty League Softball Tournament.

The Golden Knights (21-17 overall) await the winner of the losers' bracket game on Saturday afternoon and will play again at 4:00 pm to see if they can advance to Sunday's championship round.

WATCH IT AGAIN

Clarkson's Jamie Bridge didn't pitch poorly in taking the loss, as she allowed four hits and two walks in three innings, but Rensselaer was able to take advantage of any Golden Knight miscue throughout the five-inning game. The Engineers scored a run in the first inning as Victoria Greco led off with a double and moved to third on a Devan Puhl infield single. Puhl then stole second, and Greco came in as the ball went into centerfield. In the next inning, Rebecca Kienz reached on an error with two outs, stole second, advanced to third on a passed ball and then scored on another Clarkson error to make the score 2-0. Rensselaer then broke things open in the top of the third as Cam Caswell drove in a run with a sacrifice fly and Maddie Provencher reached on an error which allowed two more unearned runs to score for a 5-0 RPI lead.

Bridge was taken out after three innings and replaced by Maggie Stark, but she could not quell the RPI offense. Christine White delivered a one-out bases loaded single to drive in two, and Caswell reached on a fielder's choice to drive in another run in the fourth to make the score 8-0. Stephanie Caudle tacked on a two-out RBI-single in the fifth for an insurance run before the game was stopped after five frames.

Bridge struck out three and allowed four hits and five runs (one earned) in three innings of work, while Stark gave up four runs (three earned) on four hits in two innings. Summer Lancette accounted for two of Clarkson's three hits in the contest. Stephanie Caudle recorded her second shutout against Clarkson in less than a week, but this time only had to go five innings instead of nine. Also unlike the last time out, Caudle only struck out one hitter against three hits, as opposed to the 14 whiffs she had on April 30. Victoria Greco and Devan Puhl each scored twice and delivered two hits for the Engineers.
