CU Softball Preview - vs. SUNY Potsdam (4/26)

Winners of five straight through the first game of a doubleheader last week, the Clarkson University Softball team was flying high, but the Golden Knights have dropped three straight since and will look to get back on track with a non-league doubleheader against crosstown-rival Potsdam State on Wednesday.

The Golden Knights enter the day with a record of 16-14 overall and 5-3 in the Liberty League, still in a fine spot for a conference playoff berth. The Bears have struggled this year with an 8-19 record overall and just a 1-13 mark in the SUNYAC. Clarkson is 3-2 all-time against Potsdam, winning both games in 2016 (13-1, 11-4) and claiming the program's first-ever victory back in 2014 when the Knights took the second game of a doubleheader against the Bears.

Jamie Bridge leads the team in hitting at .351, but junior Raeanna Dunn has been Clarkson's hottest hitter as of late. Dunn is batting .347/.409/.398 and is on an 11-game hitting streak, having gone 18-for-33 in that stretch with five multi-hit games. She also leads the team with 17 stolen bases. Summer Lancette has also bolstered the team's offense with a .304/.396/.457 line, pushing Clarkson's offense to .292/.347/.397 with 38 stolen bases.

Opponents have hit Clarkson reasonably well this year, with a .330/.373/.446 line, but Jamie Bridge's hot streak from the circle has dropped that offensive line considerably. The senior righty has allowed just five earned runs in her last 46.2 innings, striking out 47 and giving up just six walks. For the year, she has a 2.62 earned run average and a 10-6 record with eight complete games and a pair of shutouts.

Potsdam's pitchers have allowed a similar offensive line to its opponents in 2017 (.330/.389/.423), but don't have a true strikeout pitcher to help diminish the damage, having just 86 strikeouts in 170 innings this year. Megan Fish is the team's top hurler, having tossed 58.1 innings with a 4.32 earned run average and four victories. On offense, senior Jordan Ott leads the team in most offensive categories including hitting (.345), on-base percentage (.394), slugging percentage (.517), hits (30), extra-base hits (10), runs batted in (16) and runs (18), and total bases (45). Brooke Falsion also has a solid line at .333/.385/.444 with a team-best 11 steals, and Lucy Condon is batting .324/.377/.394 with six stolen bases. Both Chelsea Streeter and Lauren Brace have struck three home runs for the Bears.
