Knights Swept at SLU on Sunday

Canton, NY – In a position to possibly clinch a playoff spot with a sweep, the Clarkson University Softball team instead couldn't come away with a win against St. Lawrence, dropping a pair of games against the Saints, 3-1 and 5-2, on Sunday.

The Golden Knights saw their record fall to 16-14 overall and 5-3 in the Liberty League, while St. Lawrence edged up to 18-8 and 6-4. Clarkson has plenty of time to right the ship before the weekend, taking on SUNY Canton and SUNY Potsdam on Tuesday and Wednesday before closing out the regular season against Skidmore and Rensselaer in the final days of April.

In the opener, Clarkson's Jamie Bridge and St. Lawrence's Madison Mitchell traded zeroes for the first four frames before the Knights finally broke through in the top of the fifth. Liz Caggiano led off the inning with a double to left-center and pinch-runner Samm Swiesz advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt. After another out, Summer Lancette walked and stole second to put a pair of runners in scoring position, but only Swiesz would come home on Raeanna Dunn's infield single, putting Clarkson up 1-0.

St. Lawrence responded with three runs in the bottom half of the inning as Clarkson struggled in the field with three errors. With the bases loaded, the Saints plated their first run with a fielder's choice and then went ahead on a sacrifice fly lineout to center. Another run came home on the same play as an attempted back pick went into the outfield and the ensuing throw to third wound up in the St. Lawrence dugout. That was all St. Lawrence would need as Clarkson couldn't capitalize on a bases loaded situation in the sixth or an error in the seventh by the Saints.

Dunn and Caggiano each recorded two hits for Clarkson in the first game, while Bridge allowed a single earned run in six innings, striking out four and giving up just one walk and six hits. Mitchell whiffed seven hitters in seven innings, allowing five hits and three walks but only a single run.

Game two wasn't quite as much of a pitchers' duel despite another the low score. St. Lawrence scored in the bottom of the second without the benefit of a base hit, instead forcing in the run with a bases loaded hit by pitch. The fifth inning was better for the Saints as they strung together five hits in a six-batter span to score two runs. With the bases loaded, a walk forced home a third run to put St. Lawrence up 4-0. In the top of the sixth, a two-out throwing error allowed both Jamie Bridge and Kyrstin Messier to circle the bases to cut the lead in half, but a double by Mylea Mann provided an insurance run in the bottom half of the frame for St. Lawrence.

Dunn was 3-for-4 in the second game as the only Clarkson player to record multiple hits. Mitchell again pitched well for St. Lawrence, not allowing an earned run on five hits and two walks despite no strikeouts in seven innings of work.
