Clarkson Uses Strong Pitching to Split at Rochester

For the second straight day, the Clarkson University Baseball team split a doubleheader with the University of Rochester to close out the four game set.

Like the doubleheader on Saturday, it was Rochester who took the opener, this time by the score of 5-1.

After a scoreless first inning, Rochester jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the second. A Clarkson error allowed the lead runner to reach base and then another error two batters later put runners on second and third with only one out. Tyler Schmidt drove in the first run of the day with a sacrifice fly to left field and then Aiden Finch doubled the Rochester lead with an RBI triple down the right field line.

Clarkson scored its only run of the game in the bottom of the third. Ernesto Ruiz-Sierra singled to right field to lead of the inning and then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Nate Burns. Brad Pearson was able to move Ruiz-Sierra to third base on a ground out, bringing Dom Pirro to the plate with two outs. Pirro came through with a triple to right field to score Ruiz-Sierra and cut the Rochester lead in half.

The score stayed at 2-1 until the top of the seventh when a Yellowjacket rally brought some breathing room. Finch hit a one-out home run to left center field to make the score 3-1 and then Owen Gabbey tripled to right center. Gabbey scored on a Jake Hertz double to right field and Hertz scored on a single by Pete Carrier.

Ben Knauf singled in the top of the seventh with one out as Clarkson looked to rally in the final inning, but a double play ended the threat and the game.

In the second game of the day, Clarkson once again got a strong pitching performance as the Golden Knights came away with a 7-4 victory.

In the first two innings, it looked like both teams' pitchers were going to be in for a long day as runs were scored in each of the first four half innings. Rochester took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Jack Herman. However, Clarkson answered back with two runs of its own in the first. Burns singled through the left side to start the inning and Connor Dietrich moved him up a base on a sacrifice bunt. Pirro then singled to bring Burns around to score with Pirro also taking second base on a Rochester error. One out later, Zach Riccardi singled through the left side to score Pirro. Knauf followed with a double down the right field line, but Rochester got Mike Krick to ground out to strand runners on second and third.

The second inning continued the scoring as Rochester regained the lead with two runs in its half. A Hertz single scored the first and then Carrier worked a bases-loaded walk to give Rochester the lead. Before more damage could be done though, Jeremy Barber struck out Finch on a full count to end the inning.

The Golden Knights snatched the lead back in their half of the second and never relinquished it. Joe Stockman started the inning off with a double to the right center game and then Ruiz-Sierra walked to put two runners on. Burns laid down a bunt to move the pair into scoring position. Dietrich reached on a fielder's choice and scored Stockman on the play. After a Pirro single to put runners on the corners, Chris Miller singled to right field to score Dietrich and give Clarkson a 4-3 lead.

The Golden Knights added runs in the fourth, fifth, and sixth while Rochester could muster just one run in the fifth inning. Clarkson's run in the fourth came on a Pirro RBI single with Burns scoring. Rochester answered back as Kyle Trombley hit a run scoring single. Dietrich added an RBI in the fifth and Riccardi scored on a Rochester fielding error in the sixth to give Clarkson more than enough runs.

Andrew Smith pitched the first complete game of the year for Clarkson in the loss. Smith allowed three earned runs and seven hits in seven innings of work. Nine of the 21 outs he recorded came via strikeout and he issued just one free pass. In the second game, Barber and Mike Bubniak combined to pitch the full nine inning game. Barber started and lasted the first four and two thirds innings, allowing four earned runs and nine hits to go along with six strikeouts. Bubniak closed out the final four and a third frames, allowing just three hits and zero runs to earn the win.

Clarkson leaves Rochester with a 5-7 overall record and a 2-2 mark in the Liberty League. Rochester is tied with Clarkson in the conference standings with an identical record and is 4-6 overall.

Clarkson will barely have any time to rest as the Green and Gold travel to Skidmore for a doubleheader on Wednesday, April 5th.
