Clarkson Pitching Shuts Down Bard

Two strong pitching performances allowed the Clarkson University Baseball team to complete a four game sweep of Bard with two wins on Saturday afternoon in Jack Phillips Stadium.

Clarkson is now 12-11 overall this season and 9-5 in the Liberty League. Bard drops to 8-14 overall and 3-9 in conference.

Clarkson started the first game with two runs in the first and never looked back en route to an 8-1 win.

Right off the bat, the Golden Knights jumped out ahead of Bard. Chris Miller's single was sandwiched between two Clarkson outs, before a Bard error allowed Joe Fraser to reach base and extend the inning. That error cost the Raptors as Cam Bando singled to score Miller and Ben Knauf singled to plate Fraser.

Clarkson added a run in the fourth when Miller's single scored Nate Burns who had reached on a single of his own. Bard answered in the bottom fourth when Matt Lasky manufactured a run on his own thanks to a single, passed ball, and finally scoring on a wild pitch.

The Green and Gold built their lead back up with a big fifth inning though. Fraser and Bando led the inning off with consecutive singles to put pressure on Bard's pitch. Knauf then laid down a bunt single to load the bases. Joe Stockman brought home the first run of the inning with a single through the right side. After a Bard pitching change, Ernesto Ruiz-Sierra laid down a bunt single of his own to score Bando. After a Clarkson out, Brad Pearson had an RBI groundout.

The Golden Knights added two more insurance runs in the eighth inning. Miller had another RBI single, scoring Burns once again, and then Dom Pirro had a sacrifice fly to plate Pearson.

In the second game, Bard tried to close the gap in the bottom of the ninth, but Clarkson's lead held for a 5-3 win.

After the teams traded zeros for the first three innings, Clarkson jumped out to a 5-1 lead at the end of the fifth. The Golden Knights started the scoring when Fraser's double down the left field line scored Pirro. After Fraser was erased by a Bando fielder's choice, Bando moved to third on a passed ball and a wild pitch. Knauf then hit a ground ball and Bard tried to go home to get Bando who was heading home, but he slid in ahead of the tag. In the fifth, Clarkson loaded the bases on a Mike Messier walk, a Pearson single, and a Miller hit by a pitch. Pirro drove one run in with a sacrifice fly and then Fraser singled to left to score Pearson. Bando knocked in the third run of the inning with a single of his own.

Bard got one run back in the bottom of the fifth when three straight singles got a run in and left two runners on base. However, that was it for Bard in the inning as the next three batters were retired.

The score stayed 5-1 until the bottom of the ninth inning. The first two Bard hitters were plunked and then a Clarkson error allowed one run to score and two runners to end up on second and third. However, the Golden Knights bore down as the next batter ground out to score one Bard run. After that though, the next two Raptors lined out and struck out to end the game.

For Clarkson, Andrew Smith and Mike Bubniak got the start in the first and second game respectively and both earned the victories. Smith threw seven innings for his second win of the season. He allowed one run on four hits and one walk. He had six strikeouts in the victory. In the second game, Bubniak threw seven and one third innings of his own, allowing one run on six hits with two strikeouts. Nate Burns threw the final one and two thirds, allowing two runs and earning his third career save.

Miller, Bando, and Knauf all had three hits in the first game with Miller adding a walk. Pearson, Ruiz-Sierra, and Burns also had multiple hits in the win as the Golden Knights racked up 17 hits, a season high at home. In the second game, Fraser had three hits while Bando and Pearson had two more each.

Clarkson will be on the road for a non-conference game on Tuesday. The Green and Gold will travel to Oswego State for a doubleheader starting at 2:00 pm.
