Knights Suffer Loss at St. Lawrence

With a stingy defensive effort and a smart, ball-possession offense the Clarkson University Men's Lacrosse team gave rival St. Lawrence all it could handle in the first half on Wednesday night. The 8th-ranked Saints, however, were able to pull away over the final 30 minutes to gain an 11-4 win in Liberty League action at North Country Field in Canton, NY.

The Knights, who have now dropped three straight, fall to 6-4 overall and to 1-3 in conference play. Clarkson is back in action on Saturday with a league game at Bard in Annandale-On-Hudson, NY.

St. Lawrence (10-1, 3-1) struck first just 45 seconds in, but the Saints would only hold the lead for the first five minutes of the half as Clarkson would score the next two goals. Senior Ryan DaRin tallied his team-high 30th goal of the season at 4:35. Senior Kyle Brown would give the Knights their only lead of the night with his 12th goal of the season with 9:24 to play in the second quarter. St. Lawrence answered back just over two minutes later to make it a 2-2 game entering halftime.

St. Lawrence took control in the third quarter, scoring the first five goals of the second half to grab a 7-2 lead. With 70 seconds left in the third, Clarkson put a halt to the Saints' push with a goal by Shane Kilday, his ninth of the year, to make it 7-3 in favor of the home team after 45 minutes.

Just 22 seconds into the final quarter St. Lawrence put in its eighth goal of the night. The Knights came right back with Nate Smart's first goal of the season with 13:05 left to play.

That was as close as Clarkson would get as the Saints closed out the game with the final three goals.

Jon Fairbanks paced the St. Lawrence offense with three goals and one assist.

St. Lawrence outshot Clarkson 36-20 and controlled ground balls 24-14.

Nick Strandholm finished with seven saves for the Knights, along with picking up a game-high five ground balls.
