Clarkson Falls to Canton 10-7

A nine run rally in the fourth inning was too much for the Clarkson University Baseball team to overcome as the Golden Knights fell to visiting Canton 10-7 on Tuesday afternoon in Jack Phillips Stadium.

Clarkson falls to 8-11 on the season while Canton is now 4-14.

The first three innings belonged entirely to Clarkson as the Green and Gold jumped out to a 3-0 lead and did not allow a Canton hit in that span. In the first inning, Mike Bonk walked and then Chris Miller singled through the right side. After a Clarkson out, Joe Fraser was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Cam Bando brought home the first run when Bonk scored on a sacrifice fly. Even though Ben Knauf walked to follow Bando, that was the only run Clarkson could score as three runners were left on base. In the third inning, Miller's double and Pirro's single started Clarkson with runners on the corners. Fraser then lifted a sacrifice fly to score Miller. Bando walked and then completed a double steal with Pirro. With Pirro charging home from third base, Knauf laid a bunt down the first place line that scored Pirro and put Knauf on first base with a single. Yet again though Clarkson left runners on base as neither Bando or Knauf came around to score.

After getting just one runner on base in the first three innings, Seth Douglas started the fourth inning with a bunt single and then Wilson Matos followed him with a two-run home run to left field. After two Kangaroos were retired, Canton strung together a long rally. Two singles and a walk loaded the bases for Canton. It looked like Clarkson might get out of the inning with a ground ball, but an error kept the rally alive as one run scored. A wild pitch scored another run before a walk reloaded the bases. Douglas was due up for a second time in the inning and he hit a towering grand slam to center field to make the score 8-3. Canton added one more run when Matos, who reached on a walk, came around to score thanks to singles by Brandon Welch and Trevor Keleher.

Clarkson struggled to put together any long rallies, but did slowly chip away at the Canton lead. Knauf singled in the sixth and then moved over to third base on two wild pitches. Knauf came home to score on a RBI groundout by Alex Hill. The Golden Knights added another run in the seventh when Pirro scored on a wild pitch.

Canton got one run back in the eighth inning as Travis Schindler's long double scored Brett Hoberman. Clarkson answered with two runs in the eighth as Pirro singled to score Miller and then Fraser's double to center field scored Pirro. That was the final rally for Clarkson though as a double play ball erased the only Clarkson base runner in the ninth inning.

Jeremy Barber took the loss for Clarkson as he pitched three and two thirds innings and allowed seven runs, with only two of them earned. Barber had five strikeouts with four hits allowed. Will Miles relieved Barber and could not record an out in three batters faced. Ethan Kornbrek pitched the next three and two third innings and allowed one run on two hits and two strikeouts. Nate Burns got one out before Mark Connor pitched the final one and one third innings. Miller, Pirro, and Knauf all had three hits for Clarkson while Fraser had the other two of the Golden Knights' 11.

Clarkson will return to Liberty League play by hosting Bard for a four game set this weekend. The two teams will meet for a doubleheader on Friday starting at 1:00 pm.
