Knights Outlast Plattsburgh State, 11-10, to Stay Unbeaten

Plattsburgh, NY - A 6-1 edge in the second quarter provided a solid cushion for the Clarkson University Men's Lacrosse team, but it was the Golden Knights ability to possess the ball down the stretch that gave the Green and Gold an 11-10 win over Plattsburgh State on Tuesday afternoon.

The Golden Knights remained unbeaten at 3-0, and they will face Nazareth on Friday night at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse, NY. The Cardinals suffered their first defeat of 2017, dropping to 2-1.

The first two quarters saw Clarkson win the opening face offs, and on both occasions the Golden Knights scored on those possessions. Clarkson rolled out to a 3-2 lead in the first quarter, but it was the second that saw the Knights build a bit lead. Separated by just one goal (4-3) midway through the quarter, the Knights scored five straight in the final six-plus minutes to push their advantage to 9-3. Both Kyle Brown and Scott Dosser scored man-up goals in the final 2:20, but the big break came with just one tick left on the clock when Ryan DaRin tallied his third goal of the game.

Later on, it was DaRin who had another key score for Clarkson. The Knights were held scoreless in the third and saw the margin but in half. Plattsburgh and Clarkson traded goals at the start of the fourth, and the Cardinals were within two at the 10:38 mark. However, Paul Bracy won a faceoff after a penalty by Clarkson and the Knights called timeout to set up a play. DaRin converted for Clarkson while they were down a man at the 10:15 mark to push the lead back to three. Plattsburgh wouldn't score on the man-up opportunity and mustered a pair of goals over the next seven minutes to get within one, but following the final face off, Clarkson did an outstanding job of keeping the ball in the Plattsburgh end by taking care of the ball and still putting shots on the Cardinals' goal. With Plattsburgh pressing to get the ball back, Clarkson kept the Cardinals off balance, and held on for the win.

DaRin led the Clarkson offense with five points on four goals and an assist, while Brown tacked on four points with three goals and an assist. Conor Bartlett added two goals and an assist and Ryan St. Croix contributed a goal and two assists. Scott Dosser also scored a goal and an assist. Ryan Gabriel more than held his own on faceoffs, winning 13 of his 21 tries, adding in four groundballs. Marc Simmons, Mark Uhlig, Nate Smart and Paul Bracy each scooped up three groundballs. Nick Strandholm made nine stops in the Clarkson crease.

For Plattsburgh, Ryan Callahan scored three points on two goals and an assist, and Mike Gay matched that total with a goal and two assists. Ryan Hubbard and Austin Belz also each scored twice for the Cardinals. Defensively, Kyle Espejo caused three turnovers and scooped up five groundballs. Plattsburgh's goalkeepers split time, with Donald Tesoriero making two saves in the opening 30 minutes and Austin Graham denying seven shots in the final 30 minutes.
