Clarkson Closes Spring Excursion with 22-12 Win Over Calvin

Englewood, FL – Unlike its previous two games in Florida, the Clarkson University Women's Lacrosse team didn't gain a double digit lead early in the second half, but the Golden Knights still came away with an overwhelming 22-12 victory over Calvin College to close out their southern trip.

The Golden Knights improved to 6-1 on the season with their fifth straight victory, while Calvin fell to 1-5 on the season. Clarkson will enjoy its first home game of 2017 next Wednesday when the team hosts SUNY Canton.

Although Clarkson couldn't gain a double-digit advantage until there was less than a minute to go in the second half, the Golden Knights nevertheless jumped out to an early lead over Calvin. Katie Sergeant tallied twice in the first five minutes and after a five-minute scoreless drought, the Golden Knights scored five times in a six-minute, 21-second stretch midway through the first half to push Clarkson out to a 7-1 advantage. The Golden Knights steadily plugged along as Sergeant closed out the half with her fifth and sixth goals in the final five-plus minutes of the period. However, Calvin wouldn't go away, making sure that it cut the margin to seven at the break with two goals in the final 67 seconds.

Calvin continued to chip away with the first three goals of the second half, making the score 12-8. At the midway point of the second half, the Knights of Michigan were still hanging around (14-10), but Christina Pollard scored two goals and both Lexi Smith and Kate Dillon also found the twine to push Clarkson's lead to 18-10 with just over 10 minutes to go. From there, the Knights tacked on enough offense while limiting Calvin's chances down the stretch to gain the win by double figures.

Clarkson outshot Calvin 40-17 in the game, scoring more goals (22) than it allowed shots (17). Ten different players scored at least one point for the Golden Knights, led by Sergeant's seven goals. Jaid Baytos added five points on two goals and three assists, and Taylor Collins matched that offensive output while also earning four draw controls. Pollard and Kate Dillon each scored three goals and Abby Collins also scored twice. Lexi Smith, Taylor Kwiek and Aubrey Borgesi each scored once as well, while Casey Shannon accounted for one assist. For the third straight game, Clarkson was particularly stingy in regards to clear attempts by its opponent, allowing Calvin to be successful seven times in 16 tries.

For the Knights of Calvin, Emily Cefaratti and Emma Tilma each scored three goals, with Tilma also adding an assist. Ellis Chalfant kept Calvin in the game with 14 saves and five groundballs over 60 minutes.
