Clarkson Beats Potsdam for Ninth Time in Last 10 Meetings, 14-10

Potsdam, NY – After a slow start that saw the team trailing 3-1 at the end of the first quarter, the Clarkson University Men's Lacrosse team dominated play for the final three quarters to gain a 14-10 victory over SUNY Potsdam Tuesday afternoon at Hantz Turf Field.

The majority of the statistics were even or favored Potsdam in the first quarter, but over the final three frames Clarkson led in shots (50-20), groundballs (27-9) and faceoffs (15-for-22). With the win, Clarkson improved to 5-1 on the season, while the Bears dropped to 0-2.

Potsdam played with ample energy in the first quarter, scoring on an early man-up opportunity and tacking on two more goals through the first 12-plus minutes. Once the field switched at the break between quarters, however, Clarkson found a groove offensively. Potsdam's Jack Bezek was busy in the crease, making 16 saves on 22 shots as the Golden Knights peppered the Bears' defense with 20 shots in the second quarter alone.

Leading by just a single goal at the half, Clarkson extended its lead with four of the first five goals in the third quarter. Ryan DaRin started things early with a man-up goal in the opening minute of the quarter, but it was Kyle Brown who was rifling shots past Bezek at the tail end of the period, giving the Knights an 11-7 advantage.

Taking its time for shots in the fourth quarter, Ryan St. Croix and Ryan DaRin each tallied in the first 10 minutes to put the Knights up by five goals on two occasions (12-7, 13-8). Potsdam shoed a little life in the final four minutes as Eric Soderquist and Berkley Stone scored just 24 seconds apart, but a chip in goal by Clarkson's Shane Kilday in the final two minutes gave the Knights another four-goal advantage, and with possession on the ensuing faceoff, Clarkson ran out the clock.

DaRin scored six goals and added three groundballs, while St. Croix found the net four times. Shane Kilday produced four points on two goals and two assists and Scott Dosser found his teammates on four occasions. Kyle Brown also scored twice for the Knights. Ryan Gabriel won 17 of his 27 faceoff attempts and Mark Uhlig and Paul Bracy each scooped up five groundballs. Nick Strandholm made eight saves in the Clarkson crease.

Jack Bezek kept things interesting by making 22 saves for the Bears. Berkley Stone scored four goals while Eric Soderquist and Nick Henrie each tallied twice.
