Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse | | March 10, 2017

Another Hot Start Leads Knights to 11-7 Win at Utica

Utica, NY – Cold temperatures didn't keep the Clarkson University Women's Lacrosse team from a hot start as the Golden Knights rushed out with four unanswered goals and never trailed in an 11-7 win over Utica College on Friday afternoon.

The Golden Knights improved to 3-1 overall and will be off for the next 10 days until they head to Florida for three games. Utica dropped to 1-2 on the season.

Clarkson's Katie Sergeant won the opening draw and the Knights scored on their first possession when Kate Dillon tallied at the 29:18 mark of the first half. Those first 41 seconds were the only time that they game would be tied, as the Knights scored three more times in the next seven-plus minutes to take a 4-0 lead. Utica on the other hand turned the ball over four times before they finally mustered a shot at the 21:32 mark, which did end the Pioneers scoreless drought. Any hope of a change in momentum ceased two minutes later as Clarkson began a streak of three straight goals on free-position shots. By the time Kate Dillon converted at the 16:45 mark, Utica was down 7-1 and short of answers, calling a timeout and changing goalies. Though Clarkson's offensive outburst was slowed over the next few minutes, the Golden Knights still went into the locker room with a 9-4 advantage, having doubled-up Utica in shots (17-8) and groundballs (13-7).

At the start of the second half, Clarkson pushed its lead to six (10-4) when Emma Andrews scored at 27:18, but the Knights' offense stalled for the next 22 minutes before it could finally get another goal on the board. During that time Utica cut into the Clarkson advantage, but not anywhere near enough to challenge the Green and Gold. The Pioneers scored twice midway through the half to make it 10-6, but a 13-minute collective scoreless drought only gave Clarkson more confidence that it could hold on. When Taylor Collins scored from Emma Andrews with 4:57 left in the game, the score was 11-6 and the Knights were able to cruise from there with nothing more than ball possession.

Kate Dillon produced four points on three goals and an assist and also added in five groundballs, two draws, and a caused turnover. Abby Collins added three goals and three draw controls, while Taylor Collins produced a pair of goals and caused two turnovers. Katie Sergeant was also active with five draws and three groundballs to go along with a single goal. Emma Andrews scored once and assisted on another and Lexi Smith also scored once. Samantha Gladd made six saves in the Clarkson crease and also nabbed nine groundballs.

For Utica, Rebecca Plunkett produced four points with three goals and one assist, also tossing in four draws. Brooke Miller (2-0) and Rachel Gelina (1-1) each had two points and Maggie Notter caused five turnovers and scooped up five groundballs.

Clarkson finished with a 25-20 edge in shots, a 20-18 lead in groundballs, and a 13-7 advantage in draw controls.
