Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | February 15, 2017

Knights Denied by Six Versus SLU, 93-87

Potsdam, NY – For the second time in six weeks the scoreboard was busy for St. Lawrence and the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team, but unfortunately for the Golden Knights that wasn't the only second between the two teams as the Saints came away with another six-point win, 93-87, Wednesday night at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights saw their conference playoff hopes weakened with the loss, falling to 7-8 in conference games and 12-12 overall, while St. Lawrence improved to 20-4 and 13-2. Clarkson closes out the regular season against Skidmore College on Sunday.

Though the game was tied twice in the early going, St. Lawrence stretched its modest advantage to seven points midway through the first half after a pair of free throws from Riley Naclerio at the 8:45 mark. In the next two minutes, Clarkson closed to within two following a Michael Hayduk 3-pointer and a basket from Matthew Hornak, but St. Lawrence again edged back out to a six-point lead when Kyle Kobis buried a 3-pointer. Again, the Knights rallied to tie the score at 28-28, but the Saints responded with another run that returned the lead to six. In the waning moments of the half, Hornak tossed in a 3-pointer with 35 seconds to go, which left too much time on the clock for the Saints. Willie Zachery let the clock dwindle before slicing through the lane to pick up two more points and give St. Lawrence a 42-38 edge at the break.

St. Lawrence shot 14-for-28 from the floor in the first half, making four more shots in the same amount of attempts as Clarkson. However, the Knights combatted that deficiency with three extra 3-pointers to make the game closer at the half.

Eighty points were on the scoreboard at the half, but the second half saw the two teams trade baskets constantly, with both shooting 53% in the final 20 minutes for 100 more combined points. Clarkson tied the game up for the fourth time at 50-50 and took its first lead 40 seconds later when Derek Hart converted a layup. St. Lawrence regained the lead less than a minute alter and pushed its advantage back to seven points. At that point, Liam Ellis made back-to-back baskets and a three-point play the old fashioned way by Derek Hart put Clarkson up by one (64-63). St. Lawrence scored at the other end, but this time it was the Knights turn to go on a small run. Ellis buried another 3-pointer at the 7:00 mark, giving the Knights a five-point edge, tough 90 seconds later the game was knotted up at 74-74. From there the two teams alternated points with three more ties, all the way up to 81-81 with 2:29 remaining. St. Lawrence then ended the exchange by scoring six straight, including a 3-pointer by Kyle Edwards at 1:34, and a jumper and a free throw from Edwards again 22 seconds later. Clarkson would ratchet up the defensive pressure and cut the margin to two when Hart made a layup with 23 seconds remaining, but the Knights had to foul to get the ball back. Riley Naclerio and Kyle Edwards each hit two free throws in the final 20 seconds of the half to clinch the win for the Saints.

Hart finished with 28 points and eight rebounds, recovering from a slow start (2-for-7 in the first half) to shoot 10-for-17 from the floor and 8-for-10 from the free throw line. Liam Ellis matched his career-high set just five days ago with 21 points, going 6-for-11 from the field, including four 3-pointers. Hayduk made five 3-pointers for 15 points and Hornak chipped in 12 points for Clarkson.

For St. Lawrence, Edwards shot 9-for-13 from the floor for 28 points and was matched by his backcourt mate Kyle Kobis, who also shot 9-for-13 but for 22 points. Naclerio tossed in 17 points to close out the players in double figures for the Saints.
