late third period goal by Jessica Gillham (Uxbridge, ONT) gave the fourth-ranked Clarkson University Women's Hockey team a 1-0 win over Quinnipiac on Sunday afternoon in Cheel Arena. The win along with Princeton's victory over St. Lawrence means Clarkson has clinched at least a share of the ECAC Hockey regular season title as well as the number one seed in the ECAC Hockey Playoffs for the third time in four years.

Clarkson is now 23-4-5 overall and 17-1-2 in ECAC Hockey while Quinnipiac is 18-8-6 overall and 11-6-3 in conference.

"Today was another tough game that we figured out a way to win," stated Head Coach Matt Desrosiers. "Just like yesterday, Shea made some saves to keep us in the game long enough to score the game winner in the third period. The team did a great job this weekend winning a couple close games against two top ten teams, which you are going to have to do come playoff time. We have two tough opponents again next weekend so we will need to take the positives we gained from this weekend into those games."

Although the earlier meeting this season finished 4-1 in favor of Clarkson, Sunday's game was reminiscent of the two postseason games that the Golden Knights and the Bobcats played last season. Both of those games ended 1-0 with scoring chances coming few and far between. On Sunday, the teams could only muster 23 total shots through the first two periods, without a goal, although Quinnipiac came close when a Bobcat shot hit the crossbar.

Each team had opportunities early in the third period to finally break the deadlock, with each team getting a power-play early in the frame. Neither could convert though, and it was not until there was just 5:37 remaining that either team could grab a goal. The play started when co-captain Savannah Harmon (Downers Grove, IL) poked the puck away from a Bobcat player in Clarkson's defensive zone. Gillham picked up the loose puck and quickly sent it ahead to Rhyen McGill (Whitby, ONT). McGill skated free down the left side and was able to rip a shot. McGill's shot was blocked by the goaltender, but the rebound fell back towards the middle of the rink as Gillham came flying in to tap the puck home.

Quinnipiac ratcheted up the pressure, trying to tie the score and head to overtime. The Bobcats pulled their goaltender with 45 seconds remaining, and the extra attacker almost immediately paid dividends. Quinnipiac got three shots off in the final minute, including two that hit the post, but could not score, giving Clarkson its third straight win over the Bobcats.

Quinnipiac finished with a 21-18 edge in shots. The 18 shots are a season low for Clarkson. Clarkson finished 0-5 on the power-play while killing all three of Quinnipiac's extra man opportunities. Shea Tiley (Owen Sound, ONT) made 21 saves for Clarkson for her third shutout of the season and 21st of her career. She is now second all-time at Clarkson in career shutouts. Sydney Rossman made 17 stops for Quinnipiac.

Clarkson will close out the regular season with road games at Colgate and Cornell. The Golden Knights need just one point to win the regular season title outright.
