CU Men's Basketball Preview - vs. Cazenovia (12/9/2017)

With just one more game before the break, the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team is looking to create a winning streak before it heads into finals and the holidays when the Golden Knights host Cazenovia College on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Gymnasium.

Live Stats/Live Video

The Series: Although meetings have become infrequent in the past few years, Clarkson and Cazenovia are close to even in 11 all-time matchups, with the Knights holding a narrow 6-5 edge thanks to an 80-52 win during a tournament in 2014-15. Cazenovia won four straight in the early 2000s, but the Knights have claimed victories in five of the last six games since 2003-04.

Key Stats for Clarkson (3-4): Malaquias Canery seems to have embraced his role coming off the bench for the Knights, especially in the last three games. The junior guard is averaging 14.7 points per game while shooting 51.4% from the floor in the last week. He is one of only two players in the Liberty League to average better than nine points per contest despite playing fewer than 20 minutes per game. Overall, the Knights continue to be an outstanding shooting team from beyond the arc, making 11.6 3-pointers per game at a success rate of 42.6%, with both figures ranking in the top 25 nationally.

Key Stats for Cazenovia (2-7): The Wildcats record is somewhat misleading as the team has lost six games by seven points or fewer. In fact, Cazenovia actually is plus-4 in points compared to opponents in 2017 (630-626). Will Thompson leads the Wildcats is both scoring (14.9 ppg) and rebounding (7.0 rpg) and Cameron Wilson has an incredible 48 blocked shots through nine games. Nicholas Filippi has played well of late for the Wildcats, averaging 12.3 points and 4.8 assists per game in the last four contests. Cazenovia will have its hands full with Clarkson's shooters, but the Wildcats' opponents have shot just 29.1% from the 3-point line so far this season.
