Four Finish In Double Figures as Clarkson Claims 78-71 Win Against Potsdam

Potsdam, NY – With 13 3-pointers coming from seven different players, the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team received a fairly balanced effort in its 78-71 victory over SUNY Potsdam on Tuesday night at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights evened their record at 2-2 on the season and will begin conference play this weekend at Skidmore and Rensselaer. Potsdam suffered its first loss of the season, dropping to 3-1 on the young campaign.

Potsdam scored the first basket of the half, but Clarkson rattled off 12 straight points after the Bears' score, capped by a Liam Ellis 3-pointer from the elbow-extended at 15:08. In that Clarkson run, Potsdam went 0-for-3 from the floor with four turnovers and quickly found itself down by double figures. Though the Bears would inch back to within single digits, Joe Lucas buried a 3-pointer at the 9:36 mark to begin another run by the Knights, as Clarkson watched Matthew Hornak and Matt Higgins hit back-to-back 3-pointers to make it 28-11. Potsdam hit a free throw to momentarily stop the run, but Lucas hit another 3-pointer at the 5:00 mark to make it 31-12. Clarkson would extend its advantage to as many as 20 points on two occasions, but it was Potsdam that went on a mini-run near the end of the half, as a Nosa Onabar 3-pointer pulled the Bears to within 13 at the break, 38-25.

The Bears continued their run after the 15-minute intermission, scoring the first five points of the second half, but the Knights responded with an 11-0 run to push the advantage all the way back to 19 following a Liam Ellis mid-range jumper at the 16:17 mark. A few minutes later, Dante Langley made a 3-pointer for the Bears to reduce the margin to 12 (51-39), but again Clarkson would not allow Potsdam to put together a sustained run and regained its 19-point lead at the 12:13 mark.

For the next eight minutes, Clarkson's advantage dropped to as few as 17 and ballooned to as many as 21 and it appeared as if a rout was on for the Knights. However, no one told that to the Bears bench, as several reserves came in for perceived down time, but cut into Clarkson's lead and reduced the deficit to single digits with a little over a minute to go when Tanner Stone buried a 3-pointer. Dante Viskovich hit a 3-pointer with 51 seconds left and the margin was down to six, but that was as close as Potsdam would get as Clarkson was able to make enough free throws down the stretch to hold for a seven-point win.

Clarkson finished the game shooting 50.0% from both the 3-point line (13-for-26) and from the floor overall (29-for-58). Liam Ellis finished with a game-high 19 points, shooting 8-for-10 from the floor and 3-for-4 from the arc, while adding in seven assists and four steals. Matthew Hornak and Joe Lucas each chipped in 12 points for the Knights, and Matt Higgins also added 10 points. Keenan Gayle also contributed across the board with 9 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals.

Only Danny Delsol-Lowry finished in double figures for Potsdam, as he scored 14 points on 3-for-4 shooting from the arc and a 5-for-6 effort from the free throw line. Serigne Kane added nine points, and Dante Viskovich and
Nosa Onabor each contributed eight points for the Bears.
