CU Men's Hoops Falls in Double Overtime at SLU, 111-105

Canton, NY – In a game slowed to a crawl by 64 foul calls, the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team lost its war of attrition to St. Lawrence on Tuesday night, dropping a 111-105 double overtime decision at Burkman Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights saw their record evened at 5-5 overall while dropping to 0-1 in league games, while St. Lawrence remained unbeaten in conference action at 3-0 and moved to 9-1 on the season. The 216 total combined points were the most ever in the series between the two teams, and the game also marked the first time that both teams surpassed the 100-point plateau in the same game.

Clarkson led for nearly the entire first half after scoring the first basket, seeing the game tied seconds later, but regaining the lead on free throws at 17:57. From there, the Knights rode the inside game of Derek Hart, as the senior forward was virtually unstoppable with 18 points on 7-for-10 shooting from the field and a 4-for-4 effort from the free throw line. That line helped Clarkson considerably, as the rest of the team shot 6-for-18 from the floor and only 1-for-5 from the free throw line. However, the effort from Hart was enough to quell any runs by St. Lawrence.

Up by seven at the break, Clarkson saw its lead quickly diminish to just two within two minutes of the start of the second half. However, the Knights again had plenty of answers for the Saints, gaining a double-digit advantage midway through the half. Unfortunately for Clarkson, St. Lawrence would not go away, reducing the lead with timely 3-pointers and putting together some full-court pressure in the final five minutes. That pressure saw Clarkson turn the ball over three straight times to allow the Saints back within a basket, but the Knights were able to take advantage of key baskets from Malaquias Canery. The sophomore guard finished off a three-point play with 1:46 to go and then hit a floater with 33.7 seconds left to give Clarkson a four-point advantage. Canery was whistled for his fifth foul a few seconds later, allowing the Saints back to within three. A possession later, the Saints tied the game for just the second time in the contest when Kyle Kobis hit a 3-pointer with 10.1 seconds to go.

In overtime, Clarkson quickly took the lead, but a steal and a dunk by Ben Crawford tied the game at 2:24 for St. Lawrence, and a foul 46 seconds later sent Kyle Edwards to the line, where he made two to give the Saints their first lead in the game. With 58.2 seconds to go, Kobis made a layup and converted a free throw to give St. Lawrence a three-point advantage, but an intentional foul at the other end saw Matt Higgins bury a pair of free throws and give Clarkson an additional possession. Off that extra chance, Derek Hart was sent to the line and helped the Knights regain the lead with two more free throws with 44.3 seconds to go. Willie Zachery didn't let that slow down the Saints offense as he made a jumper from the top of the key just 4.5 seconds later. Clarkson would have had a chance to tie or take the lead again, but Derek Hart was called for a surprising offensive foul, which disqualified him for the game. Two free throws at the other end gave St. Lawrence a three-point advantage, but Barryn Shark made a huge layup and hit the extra free throw to tie things up once again and sending the game to yet another overtime session.

The second overtime saw St. Lawrence utilize the depleted Clarkson bench as three starters and two key reserves were out of the game. The Saints made a few free throws to take the lead and then extended their advantage to as many as six. A 3-pointer from the top of the key by Aidan Frank pulled the Knights back to within three with 40 seconds to go, but St. Lawrence's advantage was too much to overcome as they were able to make free throws down the stretch to clinch the win.

Hart finished with a career-high 35 points to lead the Knights, the most by any Clarkson player against St. Lawrence in the shot clock era. Senior Drew Zlogar added a double-double on 15 points and 11 rebounds. Canery added 15 points before fouling out and Barryn Shark scored 13 points, all of them coming in the two overtime periods. For St. Lawrence, Willie Zachery tallied 31 points, going 17-for-20 from the free throw line, while Kyle Edwards accounted for 23 points and 10 rebounds. Kyle Kobis had 12 points and 12 boards and Ben Crawford tossed in 16. St. Lawrence made the most of its opportunities from the free throw line, going 47-for-57 in the game.  Overall, the two teams combined to take 96 free throws.
