CU Baseball Knocks Off Rochester in Liberty League Playoffs

A huge rally in the sixth inning propelled the Clarkson University Baseball team to a 9-4 win over Rochester in the opening game of the Liberty League tournament.

Clarkson improves to 20-16 on the season while Rochester drops to 22-19. Clarkson will take on the winner of Union-RPI in the next round while the loser will play Rochester.

Clarkson got on the scoreboard first when Anthony Padrazo's double scored Paddy Defino in the bottom of the third. For the next few innings though, it was all Rochester. The Yellow Jackets tied the game with a run in top of the fourth and then added two more in the fifth to take a 3-1 lead.

However, in the sixth Clarkson turned the game on its head. Greg Jasek led off with a ground-rule double down the left field line and Chris Miller followed with a walk. Brad Pearson singled through the right side to load the bases. Dom Pirro kept the hit parade going with a single through the left side to score Jasek and load the bases once more. Connor Martin hit another single to score Miller and tie the game at 3. Rochester looked to have gotten the first out of the inning when Defino grounded to the shortstop, but an error allowed everyone to reach base and Pearson to score. Ben Knauf then laced a single to center field that scored both Pirro and Martin. Rochester made a pitching change in order to stop the bleeding, but Padrazo met the new pitcher with a single that scored Defino. After Will Coleman struck out, Jasek took his second at-bat of the inning and singled to score Knauf. Miller then grounded out, but Padrazo scored on the play for the eighth and final run of the inning.

Rochester got one run back in the eighth, but that was it and Clarkson closed out the 9-4 win.

Ian Castle started the game and threw five innings, allowing three runs on nine hits and three strikeouts. Ryan Riley threw the next two and two thirds innings, picking up the win with a final line of one run on two hits, two walks, and four strikeouts. Andrew Smith faced one batter and got him out and Will Coleman pitched a perfect ninth inning.

Jasek finished with three hits in four at-bats while Padrazo had a pair of hits. Knauf and Padrazo each had a pair of RBI's with Jasek, Miller, Pirro, Martin, and Defino all knocking in one apiece.

Clarkson will play at 1:00 pm tomorrow with a chance to move onto the championship round.
