CU Women's Lacrosse Preview - at William Smith/Union (4/8-9)

At least two of the four 2-0 teams in the Liberty League will fall from the ranks of conference unbeatens this weekend, but the Clarkson University Women's Lacrosse team looks to continue its winning streak when it takes on William Smith and Union on Friday and Saturday.

The Golden Knights have won eight straight games since a season-opening loss, including the first two games on the conference slate. They, like travel partner St. Lawrence, William Smith and Union, have begun the season 2-0 and with the four teams battling out at least two and perhaps all four could suffer a loss. Clarkson, William Smith and Union have a common opponent in top-ranked Cortland State, and all three suffered similar losses, with the Herons actually coming closest with an eight-goal defeat at the hands of the Red Dragons (Clarkson fell by 10 and Union lost by 11).

Clarkson is riding a program-record eight-game winning streak and could go a long way towards playoff contention with more positive results this weekend. The team currently sits second in the Liberty League in goals (12.67 gpg) and is first in defense (6.00 gpg). Senior Christine Wright and junior Ashley Flick are the team's two top scorers, but it was junior Kate Dillon who came away with Liberty League Offensive Performer of the Week honors on Monday as she scored 44 percent of her season-point total (11 of 25) last weekend. Dillon is one of four players with more than 20 points this year for the Knights, joining Wright (56), Flick (38) and Taylor Collins (22). Wright leads the conference with 6.22 points per game and is the top player in assists as well (3.22). Flick ranks second in the Liberty League in goal scoring (3.44) and is fourth in points (4.22). Collins is Clarkson's top performer in terms of draw controls (25) and groundballs (19). In the Clarkson crease, freshman Samantha Gladd leads the conference in goals against average (5.95 gaa) with 44 saves.

William Smith has come away with just three wins in eight games, but four of the team's five losses have come against ranked teams. Hannah Connolly leads the team in scoring with 26 points on 19 goals and seven assists, while four others are also in double digits. Alexandra Bird (8-4-12), Ali Burns (11-0-11), Emy Stratton (9-2-11) and Geneva Calder (5-5-10) all contribute to a well-rounded attack. Calder also leads the team with 19 draws, while Kelsi Carr leads the team with 17 groundballs and 12 caused turnovers. Sarah Honan has seen most of the time in goal for the Herons, ranking third in goals against average (8.12 gaa) with 50 saves and a .481 save percentage.

Union won last year's Liberty League title and has started off 2016 well with two conference wins and a 5-2 overall record. Maggie Comiskey ranks second in the league in assists (2.29 apg) and is eighth in points (3.86 ppg) with 11 goals and 16 assists for 27 points. She is followed closely by Jackie Hagopian with 19 points, including a team-high 15 goals. Cailin Pandolfi has also recorded 16 points, Jessica Farland has 14 points, and Natalie Sullivan has added in 11 points. Farland is second in the league in groundballs (3.71 gpg) and has caused a team-best 10 turnovers. Kellie Cronin has contributed 17 groundballs and 11 draw controls, while Kate Kurchena has 25 draws and 15 groundballs. Jen Hughes has played about 80 percent of the time in the Union crease, accumulating a .438 save percentage and an 8.54 goals against average.
