Knights Come Up Short in Bid For Women's Lacrosse Playoff Berth

A bid for its first ever playoff berth came up just short for the Clarkson University Women's Lacrosse team on Saturday afternoon as the Golden Knights lost a tight 8-6 game to St. Lawrence at Hantz Turf Field.

Clarkson, which closed out the regular season with two setbacks in conference play, lost out on tie-breakers in its attempt to gain a spot in the four-team Liberty League playoffs. The Knights finished the season with the best record in program history with a 12-4 overall record, including a 6-3 Liberty League record.  One of the Green and Gold's most impressive wins in their record-breaking season was a 6-4 victory at William Smith on April 8. The Herons went on to win the conference regular season title and the number one seed in the upcoming league playoffs.

The Knights opened the scoring against St. Lawrence (10-7, 6-3) with the first of three goals by junior Kate Dillon, but the Saints answered back with four scores to go on top 4-1 with just over four minutes remaining in the half.

Junior Ashley Flick and senior Emma Jeffery tallied right before the break to pull Clarkson within one, at 4-3.

Dillon opened the second half with a pair of goals to give the Knights a 5-4 lead. After the Saints' Kayla Schmalz scored to tie it, Flick came back with her second goal of the game to give the Green and Gold their last lead of the day, 6-5 with 15:32 to play.

Schmalz, Abigail Owens and Kara Hurley scored over the final 15 minutes for St. Lawrence to give the visitors the 8-6 win.

Dillon and Flick led the Knights with three and two goals, respectively. Jeffery scored the other Clarkson goal. Senior Christine Wright, Clarkson's all-time leading scorer, recorded three assists.

Schmalz paced the Saints' attack with three goals.

St. Lawrence outshot Clarkson 25-17 and controlled ground balls 20-12.

Sophomore Taylor Collins picked up a team-high four ground balls for the Knights.

Freshman Samantha Gladd made nine saves in the Clarkson net.

Olga Lukas recorded the win for St. Lawrence, making six saves.
