CU Softball Preview - at Skidmore/Rensselaer (4/23-24)

The postseason hopes of the Clarkson University Softball team can be solidified or squashed this weekend when the team takes on Skidmore College and Rensselaer in the Capital District.

The Golden Knights enter the weekend with a record of 17-11 overall and 2-4 in the Liberty League. Skidmore is 12-20 and 2-4, fighting for the fourth spot in the conference tournament along with Clarkson, while Rensselaer is 22-6 overall and 5-1 in the Liberty League.

The fortune of the Golden Knights could easily be headed in another direction with a little luck on their side. A week ago, Clarkson was 17-5, having won 17 of its previous 18 games, but six contests later the Knights have lost five one-run games in the past seven days, including three walk-offs by the opposition.

Sophomore Summer Lancette is enjoying a breakout season, ranking in the top four in the Liberty League in the slash line stats with a .417 batting average (fourth), .488 on-base percentage (fourth) and .639 slugging percentage (second). She also is tied for first with three home runs and ranks second in the league in runs batted in (25) and stolen bases (20). Her 20 steals trail only teammate Raeanna Dunn (23), who is also hitting well with a .402/.466/.511 line. The sophomore infielder leads the league in steals and runs (31) while ranking fourth in hits (37). Rounding out the first three hitters in the Clarkson order, Jamie Bridge is batting .370 with 20 runs batted in (fourth) and 34 hits (sixth). Clarkson leads the conference in scoring at 5.12 runs per game and has nearly twice as many steals (67) as any other team in the league.

Much like the Knights, Skidmore tends to ride the top of its order for runs. Dani DeGregory ranks second in the league in hitting (.437) and on-base percentage (.500) and is first in total bases (60) and hits (45). Lauren Fortunato is second in the conference in total bases (56) and is tied for second in hits (39) while ranking third in runs batted in (23). Her .402/.459/.577 slash line barely trails DeGregory's rates. In the pitching circle, Amanda Carilli is sixth in the conference in earned run average at 2.87, an impressive feat considering she has pitched more than two-thirds of the innings for the Thoroughbreds this year. Overall, Skidmore has played 195 innings in its 32 games, and Carilli accounts for 136.2 of them.

Rensselaer is solid in all aspects of the game thanks to several standouts. Stephanie Caudle stars in the circle and at the dish, leading the Liberty League in most pitching categories, including victories (10), earned run average (1.71) and opponents' batting average (.216). She has also whiffed 90 hitters in 94.1 innings. At the plate, she is tied for second in on-base percentage (.500) and ranks sixth in hitting overall at .412 with a slugging percentage of .600, good enough for fourth in the conference. She has driven in more runs than any other Liberty League player, pacing the conference with 30. Devan Puhl and Morgan Kollmeier are often the runners crossing the plate in front of Caudle as the pair has combined for 48 runs scored. Kollmeier ranks second in the league with 26 runs and is hitting .330/.441/.451, while Puhl is batting an even more impressive .424/.480/.478. Rebecca Kienz ranks third in the league in stolen bases, a terrific figure since her on-base percentage is just .290.
