CU Men's Lacrosse Drops 10-9 Decision Versus Brockport

Potsdam, NY – Four consecutive goals at the start of the fourth quarter turned a two goal deficit into a two goal lead for Brockport and the Golden Eagles held on for a 10-9 win over the Clarkson University Men's Lacrosse team in non-league action Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights saw their record drop to 1-1 on the season while Brockport improved to 1-1 on the young season. Clarkson will look to edge back above .500 on Tuesday when it hosts Plattsburgh State.

Neither team was able to get much going offensively in the first quarter, as Clarkson ended the first 15 minutes up by a score of 1-0 thanks to a goal from Ryan DaRin at the 4:19 mark. What looked to be a defensive-minded game turned quickly in the second quarter as each team tallied four times. DaRin proved to be a tough match up for Brockport, scoring the second and third goals for Clarkson and assisting on their final two scores of the period.

In the third quarter, Brockport knotted the game at 5-5, the fourth time the game was tied, but Kyle Brown scored two goals to put Clarkson up 7-5 heading into the final quarter.

The final push for Brockport began in the fourth as the Golden Eagles were finally able to solve Clarkson goalkeeper Nick Strandholm. Jake Giudice scored at 14:15 to pull Brockport within one, and just 10 seconds later off the faceoff John Countryman beat the Clarkson defense to tie the game at 7-7. Two minutes later Brockport would take just its second lead of the game when Giudice found the back of the net again and the Golden Eagles would surprise Clarkson and themselves when they increased the lead to two with a man-down goal 44 seconds into their disadvantage.

With just under four minutes to go, Kyle Brown tallied his third goal of the game and brought Clarkson back within one, but Brockport responded with a goal of its own with 2:21 to go. DaRin's double move snuck a shot into the far post with 1:37 to go to give Clarkson a chance, but it appeared as if Brockport would be able to run out the clock when they won the ensuing faceoff. That wasn't the case, though, as Brockport was whistled for an unsportsmanlike penalty in the final minute, giving Clarkson a chance to tie the game and force overtime. Clarkson's final shot of the game went wide and Brockport was able to run out the clock as the ball was loose near midfield.

DaRin finished with six points on four goals and two assists and the junior also chipped in three groundballs. Brown scored three goals for Clarkson and Ryan St. Croix also scored three points with a goal and two assists. Scott Dosser scored Clarkson's other goal and Sam Groves produced two assists and three groundballs. Nicholas Lenta led the team with five groundballs and Keith Mierzwa recorded four caused turnovers.

For Brockport, John Countryman scored five times and Giudice produced four points with three goals and an assist. Zach Cook won 13 of his 21 faceoffs and led the team with nine groundballs. Colin Blind had five groundballs and caused five turnovers while Steve Gurin also caused five turnovers.

Brockport held a 34-33 advantage in shots, but the Golden Eagles edged out further in groundballs (35-25) and won 14 of the 23 faceoffs. Steve Nowak made 11 stops in the Brockport crease, while Nick Strandholm stopped 15 of the 25 shots on the Clarkson goal.
