CU Softball Sweeps Coast Guard and Juniata on First Day in Florida

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
Clermont, FL – On day one of the annual trip to Florida the Clarkson University Softball team picked up two victories, defeating the Coast Guard Academy 6-4 in the opener and beating Juniata 5-2 in the nightcap.

The Golden Knights improved to 2-4 on the season. On Saturday, Clarkson will take on Western New England and MCLA in another doubleheader.

In Clarkson's opener, the Golden Knights fell behind by two runs in the top of the first inning, but the team rallied for two in the bottom half of the second. Bridget Woolley delivered a one-out single to right to plate Caitlin Foley and Summer Lancette then drove in Ali Schwenzfeier on a fielder's choice. Two innings later Clarkson tallied three times, all with two outs. Schwenzfeier led off with a single but didn't come around to score until a few batters later when Lancette singled to left. After Raeanna Dunn followed with a walk, Sara Armstrong singled to left to score Lancette, making the score 4-2, and Jamie Bridge ripped a single to right to send Dunn home for a 5-2 lead. In the bottom half of the sixth, Dunn put herself in scoring position with a one-out double, and Armstrong followed with a single for a 6-2 Clarkson edge. The Coast Guard cut its deficit in half with a two-out, two-run homer from Hayden Short, but a pop up ended the game and gave the Knights the win.

Dunn reached base in four trips to the plate, going 3-for-3 with a walk and a pair of runs scored. Bridge went 3-for-4 and both Armstrong and Schwenzfeier were 2-for-3. Meg Tully earned the start for Clarkson, allowing five hits in 3.2 innings with four strikeouts, but it was Katie Pelton who gained the win in relief, giving up just a pair of hits in 3.1 innings of work. For Coast Guard, Hayden Short was 2-for-4 with three RBI and Emma Hvozdovich was 3-for-4 with two runs.

Game two saw the Knights jump on top in their very first at bat. Sara Armstrong reached on an error and then stole second before coming home on a double from Jamie Bridge. Two innings later, Armstrong began the rally with a single and she and Bridge circled the bases on a Liz Caggiano two-out, two-run single to put Clarkson up 3-0. In the bottom of the fourth, Clarkson tacked on two more runs with Erika Jensen scoring on a passed ball and Armstrong singling home Summer Lancette. Juniata responded with two runs in the top of the fifth, but the Eagles would get no closer.

Armstrong went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and one driven in while Bridge also went 2-for-4. The junior pitcher also picked up her first win of the season, striking out seven over 6.1 innings.
