CU Women's Hoops Rebounds with 76-66 Win Over Hartwick

Oneonta, NY – Unlike Saturday, the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team got off to a fast start with points in five of the team's first six possessions and the Golden Knights never looked back in a 76-66 victory over Hartwick College on Sunday afternoon.

The Golden Knights improved to 2-1 on the season with the victory and will return home to take on SUNY Canton on Tuesday evening just prior to the school's Thanksgiving break.

After a miss on one jump shot to start the first quarter, Clarkson converted on its next five possessions to take a modest lead. A Devin Sorell 3-pointer late in the period gave Clarkson its biggest quarter of the young season (24), pushing the lead to double figures. In the second, Hartwick briefly got back to within single digits, but the Knights' hot shooting continued and they ended the half with a 15-point edge, 40-25. Clarkson shot 58.3% from the floor in the first 20 minutes.

Hartwick scored the first six points of the third quarter, but it took the Hawks nearly the entire period to get any closer than nine points. A mini 5-0 run allowed the Hawks to pull within four (55-51) and although Hartwick was within striking distance in the fourth, Clarkson enjoyed a run of its own to pull away. At 6:41, Clarkson led just 59-55, but the Knights shot 4-for-5 from the field in the next three minutes while shutting the Hawks down at the other end. Up by 12 with just under four minutes to go, Clarkson struggled a little down the stretch, but the Knights made five straight free throws in the last 45 seconds and got a fast break layup on their last possession to claim a 10-point win.

Madison Shea and Stephanie Grobe each scored 15 points, and Shea also dished out five assists. Devin Sorell tossed in 13 points and Alyssia Marsal contributed 10 points and six rebounds. For Hartwick, Jacqui Foreman enjoyed a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds and Carly Johnson added 15. Caitlin Corbtt (9 points, 10 rebounds) and LeeAnne Green (8 points, 11 rebounds) almost posted double-doubles as well.
