CU Men's Hoops Picks Up First Win of Season in NCI Opener

Potsdam, NY – A strong first half gave the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team plenty of cushion for the final 20 minutes as the Golden Knights claimed a 79-60 victory over St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) in the nightcap of the North Country Invitational Friday night at Alumni Gymnasium.

In the first game of the tournament, Gordon College turned a 10-point halftime deficit into a 87-72 win over SUNY Potsdam. Clarkson will take on Gordon in the championship game of the tournament at 4:00 pm, while Potsdam will face St. Joseph's at 2:00 pm in the consolation contest.

Both teams suffered from a slow start in the second game, as the two teams were collectively produced only 13 points in the first five-plus minutes. That changed quickly as Clarkson scored eight points in less than a minute thanks to 3-pointers from Conrad Zampier and Matthew Hornak. Though St. Joseph's would cut the deficit to one a few minutes later, the Knights went on a huge run in the final five-plus minutes. Clarkson ended with an 18-2 run, including 13 straight points to end the half, pushing their advantage to 20 at the break following a Malaquias Canery jumper.

Clarkson shot 55.6% in the first half, shooting 15-for-27 from the field, 4-for-9 from the 3-point line, and 13-for-14 from the free throw line.

The Knights extended their lead to as many as 26 points in the second half, cruising to the win after emptying the bench with a little less than four minutes to go. Derek Hart finished with 18 points, seven rebounds, and three blocks while Conrad Zampier added 13 points on 5-for-6 shooting with three 3-pointers. Drew Zlogar and Malaquias Canery each tossed in 10 points and Matt Higgins scored eight points in 10 minutes. Keenan Gayle was a key defender for the Knights, recording four steals in 18 minutes. For St. Joseph's, Kavan Meiner finished in double figures with 10 points, while both Aaron Parra and Anthony Iglesias tallied eight points.

In the opening game, Potsdam didn't miss much in the opening minutes, racing out to a 14-4 lead in just a little over three minutes. Over the next four minutes, the lead expanded to as many as 14 points (22-8) and the Bears held a 13-point edge at the halfway point of the half. Gordon chipped away by using a solid inside-outside game and pulled to within three on two occasions (33-30, 35-32). However, a 3-pointer by Josh Blagrove in the final minute allowed the Bears to regain a double-digit advantage at the half, 42-32.

Blagrove finished with 11 points and seven boards in the first half for Potsdam, as the Bears shot 12-for-13 from the free throw line. Garrison Duvivier led Gordon with seven points.

The second half was entirely different as Gordon opened the period with a 19-5 run to take a four-point lead. Just a few moments later the Fighting Scots were ahead by double digits and never relinquished that edge for the remainder of the game. The key was Gordon College shooting at nearly twice the rate that it did in the first half, going 21-for-35 (60.0%) in the second 20 minutes, while allowing Potsdam to shoot just 37.5% (9-for-24 from the floor).

Garrison Duvivier finished with a game-high 22 points and five assists while Sam Johnson had a big double-double on 19 points and 14 rebounds, including seven on the offensive end. For Potsdam, Blagrove finished with 16 points and Jayquan Thomas added 15 points in just 19 minutes.
