CU Women's Basketball Preview - at Oneonta State/Hartwick (11/19-20)

Last year the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team played in a pair of tournaments but was unable to come away with a sweep in either weekend. The Golden Knights hope to rectify that early in 2016-17 when they travel to face Oneonta State and Hartwick College in the Mayor's Cup/Holiday Inn Classic this weekend.

The Golden Knights started off the 2016-17 right with a double-digit victory over Oswego State on Tuesday. Senior Stephanie Grobe scored 16 points, six above her season-average from last year, while freshman Molly Stewart impressed in her collegiate debut with 16 points on 6-for-8 shooting. More importantly, the Golden Knights continued to force their opponents into mistakes, causing 29 turnovers which included 23 steals. Madison Shea had a solid stat line with four points, six rebounds, eight assists and five steals, and Devin Sorell also chipped in 13 points.  Every player who saw at least 20 minutes of action on Tuesday for Clarkson recorded at least three steals.

Oneonta State, Saturday evening's opponent, went 17-10 last year and started the season with a narrow 47-44 win over Utica College. The Red Dragons lost some key players from last year's squad, but still bring back formidable talent. Cara Adams averaged 10.5 points per game in 2015-16 and started this season off with 13 points, five boards and three steals. Samantha Lisikatos scored seven points in the season-debut after averaging 5.1 points and 3.8 assists per game last year.

Host Hartwick College was 9-15 a year ago and has begun the 2016-17 campaign with a record of 1-1, scoring 48 points in a loss to Union on Tuesday but tossing in 82 in a win over Cazenovia on Thursday. Jacqui Foreman is averaging nine points per game so far, close to the 10.1 ppg (plus 7.8 rpg) she averaged last year. Carly Johnson, who averaged 5.6 points per contest in 2015-16, is averaging a team-best 12.5 ppg thanks to pouring in 19 against Cazenovia. Caitlin Corbett (10.0 ppg), Emily Stone (10.0 ppg) and Sarah Shaw (8.0 ppg) have all been solid contributors as well.
