CU Hoops Falls in Opener 84-68 Versus Plattsburgh

Potsdam, NY - Senior Derek Hart missed just one shot for the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team in its season-opener, but that wasn't nearly enough as Plattsburgh State ran away from the Golden Knights for an 84-68 decision on Wednesday night at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights play host to the annual North Country Invitational this weekend, with games including SUNY Potsdam, St. Joseph's, and Gordon College.

Despite some early sloppiness, neither team had much trouble scoring in the early going. Drew Zlogar nailed a 3-pointer at the 13:46 mark to give Clarkson a 16-14 lead as both teams were on pace for triple digits. After a Mike Hayduk lay in at the 11:31 mark maintained Clarkson's two-point edge, Plattsburgh went on a run thanks to Jonathan Patron. The sophomore didn't start but saw 11 minutes of action in the first half and made the most of it, scoring 12 of the Cardinals' 15 points in a 15-3 run that gave Plattsburgh a double-digit lead. Clarkson would never reduce the margin to a single number for the rest of the contest, as Plattsburgh finished the half with a 12-point lead, 37-25. Patron scored 15 points and had six rebounds in his 11 minutes, while Conrad Zampier scored eight points and had four boards in 16 minutes to lead Clarkson.

Plattsburgh kept the pressure on by scoring the first six points of the second half, and the Cardinals pushed their lead to 20 (52-32) by the 14:17 mark of the second half. The Knights enjoyed a quick burst to get back into the contest, thanks to back-to-back 3-pointers from Matthew Hornak and a three-point play the old-fashioned way by Derek Hart when he converted a layup and a free throw at 11:58. With 10:12 to go, the Knights were within striking distance, trailing by just 10, but Plattsburgh extended its lead to 20 in a matter of just 1:48 (65-45). From there, the Cardinals cruised and sent the margin to as many as 26 points with just under five minutes to go. At that point, both teams emptied the benches to play out the waning moments.

Hart finished with 20 points, shooting 8-for-9 from the floor, and added seven rebounds, while Zlogar contributed a near double-double on 9 points and 10 boards. Zampier also finished with 12 points. Clarkson struggled from the perimeter, shooting only 5-for-29 from beyond the 3-point arc. For Plattsburgh, Patron scored a game-high 26, going 9-for-17 from the floor and 4-of-6 from beyond the arc. Chris Middleton chipped in 13 points and three steals and Eli Bryant added 12 points and four thefts.
