CU Women's Hockey Skates to 3-3 Tie with St. Lawrence

A late goal forced overtime as the fourth-ranked Clarkson University Women's Hockey team skated to a 3-3 tie with visiting St. Lawrence on Saturday afternoon in Cheel Arena.

Clarkson is now 2-1-1 on the season while St. Lawrence remains undefeated at 3-0-1.

"I thought we were very fortunate to come away with a tie today," stated head coach Matt Desrosiers. "St Lawrence played a great game and didn't allow us to get much going. Shea (Tiley) was able to make some big saves to keep the game close and allow us the opportunity to tie it up. We definitely have some things that we need to work on heading into next weekend so this week of practice will be very important."

With each team scoring in all three periods, the two rivals went back and forth. Clarkson struck the first blow when sophomore defenseman Josiane Pozzebon scored at 2:40 off a pass from classmate Cassidy Vinkle who was behind the St. Lawrence net. Junior, assistant captain Lauren Lefler also had an assist on the goal. St. Lawrence answered at 7:00 when Hannah Miller scored on a slapshot during a Saints' 5-on-3 power play.

St. Lawrence took its first lead 8:57 on another Miller power-play goal. This time Miller scored off a scramble in front of the Clarkson net. The Golden Knights answered with a man-advantage goal of their own at 17:56 while in a 5-on-3 situation. Vinkle got her second assist of the game when she found sophomore Rhyen McGill all alone in front of the goal for an easy tap in. Freshman defenseman Ella Shelton had the second assist on the score.

The Saints once again took the lead at 15:44 in the third period when Nadine Edney scored off a rebound. As time was winding down, it looked like that goal might prove to be the winner.  However, with 27 seconds remaining in regulation, senior defenseman Corie Jacobson latched onto a loose puck to the left of the goal and let loose a low shot that found the back of the net to tie the game.

Neither team was able to score in the extra period and the game finished in a tie.

St. Lawrence held a 32-22 advantage in shots. The Saints scored on two of eight power plays while Clarkson was successful on one of its six man-advantage opportunities. Junior Shea Tiley had 29 saves for Clarkson and Grace Harrison had 19 stops for St. Lawrence.

Clarkson's next game will be on October 14th when top-ranked Wisconsin travels to Potsdam for a two-game series.
