CU Volleyball Survives Five-Setter Against Oswego

Oswego, NY - It may have just been a tune up match for this weekend's return to the Liberty League, but the Clarkson University Volleyball team shook off some rust in the early going and collected key points down the stretch to claim a five-set victory over Oswego State on Tuesday evening.

The Golden Knights won for the ninth time in their last 10 starts with the victory, improving to 12-4 on the season. The Lakers closed in on the .500 mark, falling to 9-8.

Clarkson started off well in the first set, earning points on Oswego miscues, but once the Lakers righted themselves, the Knights couldn't keep pace thanks to a lackluster offensive effort that netted them just a .059 hitting percentage. However, in sets two and three, Clarkson was back to playing a solid offense with sure-handed passes and easy strikes from the middle and the outside. It appeared as if that momentum would sway things enough for a four-set match, but Clarkson had some hiccups in the fourth set that saw an early five-point lead quickly evaporate, turning a win in the fourth set to a three-point defeat. Things looked even more grim in the fifth set after a Jillian Saenz attack floated beyond the end line and put Clarkson down 13-11. However, consecutive blocks by Rachael Aird, Saenz and Kendall Cheval tied the score up at 13-13. Down by one (14-13), Aird delivered a kill to start a three-point streak that ended the match in Clarkson's favor. Following Aird's kill, Kate Isaksen earned an ace and Saenz calmly hit the ball into open space down the rightside's line for the finish.

Rachael Aird finished with 16 kills and seven block assists as Clarkson totaled 12 blocks in all (one solo, 22 block assists). Katrina Lane delivered a double-double with 11 kills and 13 digs, while Rachel Reusch produced five total blocks and three aces. Kate Isaksen recorded a team-high 24 digs while Jillian Saenz added 39 assists and nine digs.
