The 95th season of college hockey action opens for Clarkson University this weekend when the Golden Knights officially begin the 2016-17 campaign. Guided by sixth-year head coach Casey Jones and assistants Phil Roy and Josh Hauge, Clarkson will play Hockey East foe the University of Vermont in a home-and-home series beginning with Friday's 7:00 p.m. game at Cheel Arena. The Golden Knights played an exhibition contest against Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières this past Saturday at Cheel. Clarkson lost 4-3 after the Patriots scored twice in the final 11 minutes to pull out the road win.

Clarkson brings back a solid core of 18 tested veterans and has an incoming class of eight promising newcomers to round out a roster that has skill, speed and size.Among the Clarkson lettermen are six of last year's seven leading scorers, including the top three point producers, three National Hockey League draft choices on the blueline and a three-year veteran between the pipes. Challenging the returnees for playing time is perhaps Jones' best recruiting class in his tenure with the Green and Gold. "Our team made great strides last year and returns a good core group of players, which helped us to be one of the hottest teams in the country in the second half last season," stated Jones. "We have some players who took a good step last year and my expectations are for them to make that next move into being impactful players in our league. Couple that with a highly regarded incoming recruiting class of eight freshmen (4 forwards, 3 defensemen, 1 goaltender) and there is a lot of optimism around our program."

•    Friday's game will mark the second straight season, but only the third time in the past 18 years that the Knights have opened the season in Potsdam. Clarkson is 15-8-2 in its previous 25 home openers at Cheel. Since the 2000-2001 campaign, the Knights are 6-9-1 in official season openers, including wins to start the last three seasons, and are 3-1-1 with Casey Jones as head coach. Last season, Clarkson shut out RIT 6-0 at Cheel on October 9. The Knights' last season-opening loss was a 5-4 setback at Colorado College on October 12, 2012.
•    Clarkson leads the all-time series against Vermont 52-28-2, but the Catamounts have won four straight in the series and are 7-2-1 in the last 10 meetings. The Cats swept the  Knights 2-1, 3-0 in their last games on October 17-18, 2014 in a home-and-home series.
•    Over the past four seasons, Clarkson has gone 2-13-1 against Hockey East teams.
•    Senior defenseman James de Hass wore the captain's "C" in this past Saturday's exhibition game against UQTR. Senior Perry D'Arrisso and juniors Brett Gervais and Nic Pierog were assistant captains.
•    Junior Sam Vigneault led CU in scoring last season with 12 goals and 26 points.
• The Knights dressed 24 of the 26 players on the roster, including all eight freshmen in Saturday's exhibition contest.
• The Rookies accounted for five (1-4) of CU's nine (3-6) points.
• Senior goaltender Steve Perry and junior defenseman Terrance Amorosa did not play in the exhibition game, nursing minor injuries.
•    The 2016-17 Clarkson schedule looks to be one of the more exciting and competitive campaigns in the Golden Knights' lengthy history. Entering its 95th season this fall, Clarkson will face a challenging schedule that includes a possible eight games against Hockey East foes, a notable Thanksgiving Holiday Tournament, a 17-date home slate, including a pair of contests against two traditional Big 10 powerhouse programs, and the always demanding 22-game ECAC Hockey circuit.
•    In the opening month of October, Clarkson will play six of its first eight games against teams receiving votes in the Preseason USCHO.com poll, including three games against the Top 15-ranked programs. The Knights open ECAC Hockey play on November 4 against #2-ranked Quinnipiac, the defending league regular season and tournament champion.
• The Knights are receiving votes in both national preseason polls, and are picked to finish fourth in the ECAC this year by the league coaches.
• In 2015-16 Clarkson Hockey boasted the third best home-winning percentage in the nation! The Golden Knights posted a .842 winning% with a 15-2-2 mark at Cheel Arena. Clarkson plays five home games this October.
• Rated one of the best college hockey arena fan experiences in the country, Stadium Journey Magazine (www.scout.com/stadium-journey) listed Cheel as the fourth-best hockey experience on its ranking of the 59 NCAA Division I facilities. Through the first 25 years at Cheel (1991-2016), 1,249,386 fans have witnessed the Knights play. The Green and Gold have posted a.656 Winning % on their home ice since 1991 with a 278-135-46 record at Cheel.
•    In its 95th season, Clarkson boasts 71 winning campaigns and a 1,395-835-149 all-time record for a .618 winning % since 1920-21.
•    Clarkson was ranked 15th among the Top 25 College Hockey Programs of All Time by HERO Sports - http://herosports.com/
•    Four current Golden Knights have been selected in the NHL Draft – James de Haas (2012 Detroit - 6th rd, 170), Terrence Amorosa (2013 Philadelphia - 5th rd, 189), Troy Josephs (2013 Pittsburgh - 7th rd, 209) and Kelly Summers (2014 Ottawa - 7th rd, 189).

The Series:
Clarkson holds a commanding 52-28-2 lead in the series against Vermont, which began with a 5-3 win for the Knights on January 13, 1971 in Potsdam. The Catamounts, however, have won the last four meetings, including a home-and-home sweep in their last meetings on October 17-18, 2014. Vermont holds a 7-2-1 advantage in the last 10 meetings. The Knights' last victory against UVM was a 3-2 triumph in Burlington on February 11, 2005. Clarkson is 11-9-1 against the Cats at Cheel Arena and 22-12-1 at Gutterson Fieldhouse.

Troy Josephs is the only current Knight to have scored a goal against Vermont. Jordan Boucher and Sam Vigneault have one assist in the series. Steve Perry has played in three games against UVM with a .873 save percentage and a 2.70 goals against average.
