A stirring comeback victory over Colgate on Saturday afternoon helped the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team move up into a tie for second in the ECAC Hockey standings. The Golden Knights will try to continue that momentum as they take on St. Lawrence in a home-and-home series this week.
The North Country rivals will first meet in a 7:00 pm game on Thursday night at Appleton Arena in Canton, before returning to Potsdam for a 3:00 pm game on Saturday afternoon at Cheel Arena

Led by eighth-year head coach Matt Desrosiers and second-year assistant coaches Britni Smith and Meghan Duggan, the Green and Gold, ranked 5th/6th in the national polls, have a 20-3-3 overall record with an 8-3-3 conference mark. It is the fifth consecutive season that Clarkson has reached the 20 win mark, one of only four teams to do so. Clarkson is also unbeaten in seven straight games, which is tied for the fifth longest active streak in the country.

Junior Genevieve Bannon's big day against Colgate helped the Golden Knights comeback from a 2-0 deficit. Bannon scored a pair of goals, including the game-winner. She is third on the team in points with 24 on seven goals and 17 assists. Bannon has notched at least one point in six of the last seven games. Bannon earned a spot on the ECAC Hockey Weekly Honor Roll for the third time this season and the second consecutive week.

Freshman Rhyen McGill was the only Clarkson player other than Bannon to score multiple goals this weekend en route to being named ECAC Hockey Rookie of the Week. McGill scored in both the 2-2 tie against Cornell and the 3-2 victory over Colgate. She now has a goal in three consecutive games. She now has 17 points this season, second to only classmate Loren Gabel amongst Clarkson newcomers. McGill is tied for 15th in the country and tied for fourth in the conference in points per game among rookies, while Gabel is tied for 11th and seventh respectively.

Other than McGill, sophomore Amanda Titus was the other Clarkson skater to have a point in both games. Titus had an assist against both Cornell and Colgate. It broke an 11 game streak without a point for Titus. It is the third time this season that Titus has scored a point in consecutive games.

Senior captain Shannon MacAulay and senior assistant captain Olivia Howe both tallied one point this weekend. Howe scored a short-handed goal against Cornell on Friday while MacAulay had an assist on the game-winning goal against Colgate on Saturday. Howe now has 91 career points while MacAulay is at 88. Both have been especially strong since the calendar turned to 2016. In the six games in 2016, Howe has six points while MacAulay has five. Only McGill, who has eight, and Mercer, who has six, have more.

Clarkson has been one of the top teams on both offense and defense among ECAC Hockey squads. In conference games, Clarkson has the second best scoring defense, allowing just 1.43 goals per game, with a scoring offense that is tied for first at 3.07 goals per game. The Golden Knights have also been strong on the penalty kill, with a 90.7% success rate the fourth best mark. However, Clarkson has struggled to convert extra man opportunities. Clarkson is 11th with a success rate of just 9.5% in conference games.

St. Lawrence has a 13-10-3 overall record this year and a 7-5-2 conference mark, putting the Saints in sixth place in the conference standings. St. Lawrence is above.500, but has been outscored 71-70 this season. Kennedy Marchment and Brooke Webster lead the team with 23 points this season, with each grabbing 11 in conference games. In goal, St. Lawrence has three different players who have all appeared in at least nine games. Sonjia Shelly has played in a team-high 13 games, Brooke Wolejko leads the way with a .714 winning percentage, and Grace Harrison has the best save percentage and goals against average amongst the trio.

Clarkson leads the all-time series between the two teams 19-17-4. Lately though, the series has been thoroughly dominated by the Golden Knights, who have beaten the Saints 12 of the last 14 meetings and five straight.  Clarkson has already defeated St. Lawrence twice this season, winning 4-0 at home followed by a 3-2 win at Appleton Arena. Junior assistant captain Cayley Mercer and senior assistant captain Erin Ambrose have enjoyed success against St. Lawrence. Mercer has 13 points in 10 career games against the Saints while Ambrose has 12 points in 12 games. Macaulay leads the way with seven goals, including a hat trick in a 5-0 home win last season.
