Loggins Threes Key CU Women's Hoops Win Over RIT

Potsdam, NY – Plenty of lead changes occurred in the fourth quarter of Friday night's game, but it was back-to-back 3-pointers from Ashley Loggins that changed the momentum for good as the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team downed RIT 74-65 in Liberty League action at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights improved to 9-4 overall and 4-2 in the Liberty League with their fourth consecutive victory, while RIT was knocked out of the ranks of the conference unbeatens, falling to 10-3 and 3-1.

For the second straight game, Clarkson utilized full-court pressure to put an undefeated Liberty League opponent on its heels as the Knights forced 16 turnovers in the opening 20 minutes. The Tigers shot well enough when they got the ball down the court and were able to take a shot at the rim, but those opportunities were rare in the early going and the Knights took advantage. In the final two minutes of the half, the Knights went on a 7-0 run, keyed by an Ashley Loggins three-point play that gave Clarkson a 19-8 lead at the end of the first quarter. Clarkson extended its lead to as many as 16 in the second quarter, but RIT began to find its range from the perimeter with 3-pointers from Jessica Glaz and Cori Okada to get back to within 10 with just under three minutes to go. A layup by Okada in the final minute allowed the Tigers to get back within single digits at halftime (32-23).

Madison Shea led Clarkson with eight points and four steals in the first half, but Clarkson struggled from the perimeter, going scoreless in 10 chances from beyond the 3-point arc. Okada stabilized RIT's ball handling in the backcourt and also provided some scoring off the bench with 10 points in just nine minutes.

After the third quarter opened with a Clarkson basket, RIT went on a 10-0 run, capped off by a Jessica Glaz 3-pointer, to allow the Tigers back into the game. Though Clarkson would keep the Tigers at bay for the quarter, midway through the fourth another Glaz 3-pointer gave the Tigers their first lead at the game with 6:13 to go (51-50). The next eight times that the teams scored points the lead changed and it appeared as if RIT would complete the comeback when Okada nailed a 3-pointer with 3:15 to go to put the Tigers up by four. However, Devin Sorell made three free throws and Ashley Loggins buried back-to-back 3-pointers to put Clarkson back up by two and Clarkson ended the game with a 10-0 run to claim a nine-point win.

Loggins finished with a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds to go along with four steals. Sorell went just 1-for-12 from beyond the 3-point arc, but still finished with 17 points. Stephanie Grobe tossed in 15 points and six rebounds and Madison Shea added 14 points, five assists and four steals. For the Tigers, Okada came off the bench to score 18 points, going 7-for-14 from the field overall with four 3-pointers, and Jessica Glaz added 14 points, seven rebounds and three steals. Tara Lynch also had an impressive all-around game with 16 points, 11 rebounds and four assists.
