Flynn Scores Late Goal as Clarkson Beats Plattsburgh 2-1

A late goal from Lauren Flynn broke the deadlock and drove the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team to a 2-1 victory over visiting Plattsburgh State on Sunday afternoon on Hantz Turf Field.

Clarkson now owns a perfect 3-0-0 record while Plattsburgh falls to 1-2-0. The 3-0-0 start is the best for Clarkson since the Golden Knights opened the 2012 season with four straight wins.

Just one day after scoring her first two collegiate goals, Summer Gillespie added a third on Sunday. Flynn passed to Gillespie, who slalomed between two Cardinal defenders and lifted her shot over the oncoming Plattsburgh keeper to make the score 1-0.

Plattsburgh tied the score in the 33rd minute. Anissa Hartmann stole the ball deep in the Clarkson end and went in on a breakaway, putting her shot into the bottom right corner.

With neither team seemingly able to break the 1-1 tie, it looked like there would be an overtime period. But with just under 15 minutes left, Clarkson broke through. Kanoe Eichholz played a deep pass to Gillespie, who held the ball up and then laid it into the path of the onrushing Flynn. Flynn dribbled into the right side of the box and hit a shot across the goal into the bottom left corner to give Clarkson a 2-1 lead. It was the third goal in as many games for Flynn. She also has two assists, putting her at eight points and she shares the team lead with Gillespie.

Clarkson's defense held strong in the final few minutes, allowing Flynn's goal to stand as the winning score. It represented the first win for the Green and Gold over Plattsburgh since 2012.

Plattsburgh held a 19-8 edge in shots, and a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks. Anna Demasi made six saves in the Clarkson goal with Nicole Gibson stopping four shots.

Clarkson will play their first road game when they Johnson State for a 2:00 pm game next Saturday.
