Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Sept. 1, 2015

Golden Knights Fall to Plattsburgh 2-1 in Overtime

After 70 minutes of scoreless action, an overtime goal saw the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team fall to Plattsburgh State 2-1 on Tuesday night.

Clarkson is now 0-1 on the year while Plattsburgh holds a 1-0 record.
Clarkson's next game will be on Saturday when they return home to host Fredonia State at 12 noon in the first round of the North Country Classic.

Plattsburgh would get on the board early. Just six and a half minutes into the game, the Cardinals would lead 1-0. The goal came when Nelson Vetter crossed to the far post where Nick Economou headed the ball into the back of the net.

Clarkson would strike back 20 minutes later. Kevin Calnan played a through ball to Tucker Wilcox, who beat both a Plattsburgh defender and the Cardinals' goalkeeper and score his first goal of the season.

While both teams had chances to score in the second half, with 14 total shots being taken in the period, the game would remain deadlocked after 90 minutes and headed to overtime. It would be the first time the two schools had played an overtime game since 1996.

However, after seventy minutes without a goal, it would only take three overtime minutes for Plattsburgh to score. It would again be through a cross to the back post, this time it was Fabian Chaparro playing a ball onto the head of Nicholas Laurent who nodded in the game-winning goal.

Clarkson goalkeeper Riley McDonald made eight saves in his collegiate debut while Plattsburgh's goalkeeper, Mitchell Jordan had four stops of his own. The Cardinals had an 18-9 advantage in shots and took 6 corners compared to zero for Clarkson.

The Golden Knights haven't beaten Plattsburgh since the tail end of the 1998 season. Since that time, Clarkson has come within a single goal of Plattsburgh on three other occasions, including a 2010 matchup in which current Clarkson head coach Chris Taylor scored the eventual game-winner, a second-half goal in a 1-0 Plattsburgh victory.
