Potsdam Capitalizes on Clarkson Miscues in 10-4 Win

Potsdam, NY - Close to three weeks have passed since the Clarkson University Softball team took the field and the rust was evident as the Golden Knights committed five errors in a 10-4 loss to Potsdam State Wednesday afternoon at Scott Field.

The Golden Knights fell to 10-3 overall and Potsdam improved to 3-12. The second game was called in the top of the first inning after the ball sailed on several throws and the field was too wet from a combination of snow and rain.

The Bears took little time in getting on the scoreboard, as Jordan Ott singled to lead off the game, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and error, and then finished off the circuit by scoring on a sacrifice fly from Katie Marsman. In the second, Erin Murphy began the threat with a two-out double and scored on an error. Ott then delivered an RBI double and Carina Chirinko singled to plate the third run of the inning. The following inning saw several miscues come back to haunt the Knights. Two early errors were enough of a spark for the Bears, as the Potsdam had four hits in five at bats near the bottom of its lineup and flipped it over to bat around, scoring six runs. All of Potsdam's 10 runs in the first three innings were unearned.

In the bottom of the third, Clarkson responded with three runs of its own. Alycia Short led off with a single and advanced to second on a failed pickoff attempt. After a groundout, Summer Lancette walked to put runners on the corners. Jamie Bridge then drilled a triple to left-center to score two, and she came around on a single up the middle by Chelsea Elliott. In the bottom half of the fourth, Clarkson added one more run. With runners on the corners once again, Raeanna Dunn stole second base and as the throw went through to second base Jen Latham used a delay steal of home to give Clarkson its fourth run. That, however, would be the end of the scoring offense for both teams as the chill in the air and some late-inning precipitation made hitting more difficult.

Clarkson had five hits in the game and the safeties were spread out among five different players. For Potsdam, Chirinko was 3-for-3 with three RBI while Ott and Murphy each added in two hits.

Katie Pelton took the loss for Clarkson, allowing 10 hits and a walk over seven innings, but striking out seven. Chirinko recorded seven outs in the circle for Potsdam before being relieved by Meghan Dougherty. She finished off the third inning and then pitched the final four frames to earn her first win of the season, allowing one hit and four walks while whiffing four.
