Knights Earn Split at SUNY Canton, Take Season Series 3-1

Canton, NY - Heading into the biggest weekend of the year with plenty of playoff implications, the Clarkson University Softball team built a little momentum with a split against SUNY Canton on Friday afternoon, dropping the first contest 6-4 prior to winning the nightcap 8-7.

The Golden Knights moved to 18-9 overall, tripling their win total from last season, while SUNY Canton saw its record go to 10-17.

Clarkson jumped on top in its first at bat, rallying with two outs on a walk by Jamie Bridge and a single by Chelsea Elliott. Ali Schwenzfeier then singled to center to send Bridge home with the first run of the game, but the Knights lead would be short-lived as SUNY Canton's Shannon Dowling ripped a two-run double to give the Kangaroos the lead. The first batter of the top of the second, Erika Jensen, tied the game up 2-2 when she hit a solo home run to left. Canton scored a run in the third and another in the fifth for a 4-2 lead, but Clarkson responded with two in the top of the sixth. Jensen second on a grounder that ricocheted into the outfield off the first baseman's glove and then Katie Scott came home on a fielder's choice as Katie Pelton eluded a tag between second and third. The Knights rally would not be enough, though, as Canton scored twice in the bottom half of the sixth and then wiggled out of a jam in the seventh to gain the win.
Jensen finished 3-for-4 with a pair of runs and Schwenzfeier was 2-for-4 in the opener. Katie Pelton took the loss, allowing only five hits and no walks over six innings.

In game two of the doubleheader, both teams found their offense early on once again. Clarkson scored twice in the first when Raeanna Dunn and Summer Lancette both reached and then executed a double steal. Dunn then scampered home on an RBI groundout from Jamie Bridge and Lancette scored on a sacrifice fly from Schwenzfeier. However, Canton's Shannon Dowling hit a three-run homer to center to quickly take the lead. In the second, Clarkson scored two more runs as Katelin Ferguson reached on a fielder's choice and came home on an error and Dunn followed with a sacrifice fly to plate Alycia Short. Canton tied it in the bottom half of the second, but the bats went silent for the next two innings.

Things got going again in the fifth for Clarkson as the team scored three times. Dunn led off with a triple and then was sent home on a Jamie Bridge double. Schwenzfeier singled home Bridge and Chelsea Elliott scored on a sacrifice fly by Jensen. SUNY Canton hit back-to-back homers in the fifth to tie the game up at 7-7, but that momentum would not carry over into the following innings. Clarkson needed just one more run to pick up the split, and did so in the seventh inning. Summer Lancette doubled to center to start off the frame and Elliott's double to right-center sent her home easily with what proved to be the winning run.

Lancette finished with three hits in four at bats and scored twice, and Dunn, Bridge and Elliott each added two hits apiece as the top four hitters in the lineup combined to go 9-for-14 with six runs scored and four more driven in. Pelton had a no-decision after going the first three innings, and Bridge gained the win by closing out the final four innings, striking out four and allowing four hits.
